Opening a SNES

I feel stupid asking this question, but...

I purchased some 4.5mm game bits + drivers from eBay, but still cannot get my SNES open. I managed to get 3 of 6 screws loose, but the last 3 are too deep for the driver to fit into. I tried drilling bigger holes into the casing to fit the driver into (and it seems it's going deep enough now), but I still cannot get these screws to budge.

Anyone have any tricks to getting this done? These bits seem totally worthless, and I still have my N64 to do too...

I bought a bit off EBay and it worked fine for opening a SNES, it fit perfectly into all the existing holes.

Nick,

The sellers on eBay don't advertise the length of the bits, but they come in two length sizes, along with the two head sizes. The longer units are able to reach the deep SNES screws, I was able to open up my old SNES for cleaning this way. Some of the bits I've noticed to be just a slight bit thicker and having difficulty reaching all the way inside, but the longer bits definitely have enough reach on the thin body of the bit.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

In other words, they sell useless bits and useful bits. :lolz:

The bits I have will reach the screws, but not when attached to the driver (they lose about 1/4" of length). I tried twisting them by hand, but no luck...

Curious, where did you guys buy yours?

I bought mine off EBay, the seller's description actually mentioned that it's longer than the other bits so that's what made me buy it.

My kit I bought about 5-6 years ago came with some kind of extender thing for all the bits in the kit. You could always see if your local hardware store has something like that. Shouldn't cost that much.

My bits just barely stick out of the bottom of the SNES..With the sctrew driver tool I got with them I have to put something in the hole of the tool so that I can press down on the bits otherwise the bits just spin because the bit goes to far into the tool

I used needle nose pliers to grab, push and loosen the screws with the bits once.

Chris1,

Take a dremel tool and put a slot in the back of the bit so you can use a regular screwdriver with it.
