The spammers send out as many of them as possible, it's all about quantity.

If you advertise your stuff via traditional flyers or newspaper ads, about 8-10% of the target group will give you feedback and 1% of them will become new customers. These values are roughly the same for email spamming (aka "direct marketing") but we're not talking about 1,000 flyers or a paper with a number of copies of 5,000-10,000 but millions of spam mails and spam posts in bbs's... now do the math, 10% feedback, 1% new customers... of course it's not always like that but never underestimate the power of spam, you'd be surprised how many people buy stuff that gets advertised like that. Idiots.
