Smallest Supergun Power Supply?

hi! I was in my local computer store the other day and I saw a really cool pc power supply for the supergun that I'm building. It seemed to be an 200W ATX. Is that good enough? I've worked with the ATX supplies before and I know how to use them in a supergun, but is 200W enough to run the board and a JROK converter?

I like the idea of that kind of PS because it's protected and has a switch and power outlet right on it. I've seen the ones that are just like a little board and lacked the -12V, I don't want one like that. BTW the one I was looking at was $40 CDN (~$26US).

it is.
i'm using an AT 200w psu & a jrok at the moment and it's been enough for the boards, i tested. (mv-1a, mv-1fz, mv-2, mvs-2f, mv-4f & mv-4fs)

Well, I tried a Cincon mini-PSU's (same as those used by broken and jhendrix) with two 4-slots (older and newer versions) and the results were somewhat disappointing: the picture seemed to be OK at first but after a while I noticed it wasn't 100% stable: it was slightly trembling and there were lines, particularly noticeable when the screen was black. No, adjusting the voltage would not do... On the other hand, when I use my arcade PSU the picture is simply perfect... My conclusion is: fuck these small psu's, I want my arcade boards and to be powered exclusively by arcade psu's. I recommend you do the same.

Oh, and 200W is overkill for any Jamma board...

Thats odd. I haven't noticed anything like that at all on my 2 slot. I wonder if that Cincon just wasn't supplying enough current for the 4 slot?

I am starting on a general purpose SuperGun soon and I am speccing out a much larger PSU for it. Something capable of supplying up to between 100 to 150 watts total (depending on cooling) across the +5, +12 and -5 volt rails.

Interesting.

go for 5V at first and go up in .1 v steps to see if it helps. just don't go above 5.5, to be safe.

You could use a PC's power supply with no problem, but I would use an arcade power supply. They are not that expensive and supply all the voltages you are going to need and give you the right amount of amps. Peter Chou is the brand I use in my cabinet.

I tested the current output of the Cincon mini-PSU with a few boards. I first measured them with my 15A arcade PSU, just to establish what the actual draw is. Here's the results:

4-slot (newer version), with 2 carts inserted (Spin Master and Blazing Star): 2.34A

The King of Dragons: 2.68A

Strider: 2.80A

In The Hunt: 2.62A

SAR-Search&Rescue: 3.08

Then I tested these boards with the Cincon PSU: the 4-slot, King of Dragons and In The Hunt did boot but showed those little problems I described above: picture not 100% stable, when the screen is filled with objects and colours this is hardly noticeable but when the screen is (mostly) black/dark the picture flickers. Not much but I find it disturbing. Also, now and then you get lines. Again, not really noticeable except when large black areas appear on screen.
Neither Strider nor SAR would boot, no way...
My conclusion then is that it can only be a current issue: the PSU, despite being rated 4.4A, supplies at best 2.7A, which may be enough to power some boards but not enough to make them run flawlessly.

It would be interesting to see if other people that have this PSU (broken, jhendrix,??) can confirm my results.
