Painting Discussion
You are right jonny, it did clean up much better than I expected. But unfortunately, the pictures lie a bit. There are two cigarette burns and something that looks like liquid paper on the control panel. One of the cigarette burns buckled the plastic and that part needs to be sanded smooth. There are quite a few scuffs on the front area and a few small dents on the edges that should either be hammered out or filled - I was able to remove the paint where something hit it , but when you run your hand over it you can tell that is not smooth. There are also a few areas that the paint has chipped down to the metal, they are small, but when you are close enough you can see them. The part that needs the most help is the back cover. It looks like the cab was moved on its back without anything to protect it at some point. There are dozens of scratches down to the metal. The before and after picture I posted of the back cover is the inside view. Then of course, as you mentioned, the bezel and marquee need to be brightened up. With all those small flaws I think I would be happier if I fixed the dents and painted it all one uniform color. What I would like is a factory new appearance. I have talked to a few body shops and they do not seem interested. I guess they get more money (with less effort) doing their normal paint and body work. I have not gotten any shop to agree to do it for any price.
The good news is that I have talked with Scott at Mame Marquees and he is going to help me reproduce the side art. I will be removing the what is on there (which have some wear on them in some spots) and he is going to do a scan of them for me. The up side is that anyone else that may be interested in restoring a Super Neo 29 Type II cab will be able to get reproduction artwork.
So I guess the only question now is what type of paint and who will do the work - which unfortunately looks like me. My problem is that I want it perfect and that could take some effort.
I was thinking of epoxy paint because it looks like that is the paint that is on there now and it is what they put on refrigerators and stoves. It is supposed to provide a hard, scratch resistant coating. I was told that DuPont makes good paint. The other problem is applying the paint, I don't have a spray rig. Perhaps I could buy the sprayer and rent a compressor from Home Depot.
I was thinking of practicing on the MV-4F cover and the cab back cover and see if my Do-it-yourself skills are up to the task. That way if I don't like it I can increase my search area for body shops that might do the work. I also have a CMVS that is in a plastic Neo CD case that I have plans to make white as well. (don't worry the Neo CD was dead and I gave the guts to Channel Maniac to use in his board repairs) I could try the epoxy paint on that plastic and see how it turns out before attempting the bezel and marquee.
Anyone got any better ideas? Can anyone recommend an epoxy paint? Seems like the word on the forums is use auto paint if possible, and stay away from Krylon if you plan to do it yourself.
