I just bought a Hyper 64 cab and a four slot board over the weekend :buttrock: I started cleaning it up last night.

The question I had is about the marquee. The Hyper 64 has a camera and some sort of screen that I do not think can be used with only one cabinet. I was thinking of removing them (and keeping them so that it can always be restored) and replacing with a screen from one of those LCD picture frames mounted vertical. Since I have no way to display mini marquees - I thought that the LCD picture frame could be loaded with scans of mini marquees. It could be set up to cycle through the marquees of the games I own - every 5 or 10 minutes showing a different one.

Is this a good idea or do you hate it?

I will post some pictures of my cab soon.

Thanks for the feedback. I do not think that LCD picture frames are that expensive anymore - perhaps $60-70 for a nice one with an 8-9" viewable screen.

I am thinking that finding a way to mount it without altering the existing hardware inside the marquee will take the most effort - I just want to be sure that it is fully reversible - even if I never change back.

Anybody know where I could get the full collection of mini marquee scans?

I found about 60 of them here http://www.crazykong.com/scans/

Here's what you do, sell me your LCD screen. Mine doesn't work and the replacements are impossible to find :)

J/K(... or am I?)

I've considered doing something similar though, putting an LCD touchscreen monitor up there and making it a MAME menu. The picture frame thing is a cool idea.

Doesn't the screen in the marquee display the same picture as the main monitor? If it does, then I say leave it be. If its just blank, mini marquees would be an awesome idea.

Thanks for the feedback.

Dub, thanks for the link, I was able to get them all except one. I will try some in a LCD frame and see what it looks like. not sure if I will have to resize them or not. I'll post it even if its bad.

Here are some before and after pics of my new Hyper64 cab.

I just took these a few minutes ago.

I looked into having it painted today and talked to a few paint and body shops - seems there are few that are interested in helping guys like us out. Not sure what the problem is, maybe they think there is not enough money in it for them?

I was able to get one paint and body guy to tell me how to do it myself. While I am no retard when it comes to do it yourself work, I really did want a more professional result - and I would not have minded paying for it. I read about what others have done here and seen both the good and bad results.

Seems like the cab has epoxy type paint on it - it seemed very durable when I was cleaning it up. I was thinking of investigating using that for repainting it.

Any thought or recommendations?

Thanks for the reply. I think I have read just about everything I could find on painting here on the forums. I did not recall anyone using epoxy paint and was curious if anyone has tried it. I would be nice to know what sort of results they got. I really wanted to know if epoxy worked well on metal and plastic, or just one, what brand they used, etc..

that cab looks super clean now that you cleaned it up. does the whole cab need paint? it just looks to me that the bezel and top marquee are yellowed which is incredibly typical. why not just pull those off and take them in for paint at an autobody shop or something along those lines? hell, take the cab too if you can and have them match the paint.

it just seems like the cab is in great shape minus the bezel and marquee. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Painting Discussion

You are right jonny, it did clean up much better than I expected. But unfortunately, the pictures lie a bit. There are two cigarette burns and something that looks like liquid paper on the control panel. One of the cigarette burns buckled the plastic and that part needs to be sanded smooth. There are quite a few scuffs on the front area and a few small dents on the edges that should either be hammered out or filled - I was able to remove the paint where something hit it , but when you run your hand over it you can tell that is not smooth. There are also a few areas that the paint has chipped down to the metal, they are small, but when you are close enough you can see them. The part that needs the most help is the back cover. It looks like the cab was moved on its back without anything to protect it at some point. There are dozens of scratches down to the metal. The before and after picture I posted of the back cover is the inside view. Then of course, as you mentioned, the bezel and marquee need to be brightened up. With all those small flaws I think I would be happier if I fixed the dents and painted it all one uniform color. What I would like is a factory new appearance. I have talked to a few body shops and they do not seem interested. I guess they get more money (with less effort) doing their normal paint and body work. I have not gotten any shop to agree to do it for any price.

The good news is that I have talked with Scott at Mame Marquees and he is going to help me reproduce the side art. I will be removing the what is on there (which have some wear on them in some spots) and he is going to do a scan of them for me. The up side is that anyone else that may be interested in restoring a Super Neo 29 Type II cab will be able to get reproduction artwork.

So I guess the only question now is what type of paint and who will do the work - which unfortunately looks like me. My problem is that I want it perfect and that could take some effort.

I was thinking of epoxy paint because it looks like that is the paint that is on there now and it is what they put on refrigerators and stoves. It is supposed to provide a hard, scratch resistant coating. I was told that DuPont makes good paint. The other problem is applying the paint, I don't have a spray rig. Perhaps I could buy the sprayer and rent a compressor from Home Depot.

I was thinking of practicing on the MV-4F cover and the cab back cover and see if my Do-it-yourself skills are up to the task. That way if I don't like it I can increase my search area for body shops that might do the work. I also have a CMVS that is in a plastic Neo CD case that I have plans to make white as well. (don't worry the Neo CD was dead and I gave the guts to Channel Maniac to use in his board repairs) I could try the epoxy paint on that plastic and see how it turns out before attempting the bezel and marquee.

Anyone got any better ideas? Can anyone recommend an epoxy paint? Seems like the word on the forums is use auto paint if possible, and stay away from Krylon if you plan to do it yourself.

Side Art

The only thing I am aware of is the regular Super Neo 29 side art on Mame marquees. Any idea where to get that?

I nice add on to the idea would have move list's on the marquee for different characters but this applies usually only to fighting games but its something to think about.

Thanks for the post Dub, I tried to view the file, but no luck. I was using a Irfan Viewer which is supposed to support eps files. I do not have Adobe - know of a viewer that works for this file?
