I just realized that, after my 20" SD CRT dies, I won't have anything decent to play my pre-Dreamcast displays on....

No way I'm going to go out and blow $100-$250 on another [used] CRT TV.

I've taken to converting the video (and some controls) of all my pre-DC consoles to Jamma RGB. Even ordered a duck hunt PPU for my NES.

For the stuff with analog controls and more than 4 buttons, I'll play with the door open.

I just don't see myself playing games on a TV in 5 years.

Or I hope they straighten out Plasma + LCD technology so that older video standards will work nicely.

Thoughts?

I just play my older games on an HD CRT, it can scan 480i/p and looks fantastic.

What they really need to do is start including decent upscalers. SD TV looks fairly good coming in through my PC's TV tuner and being scaled by the video cards.

Hmmm. I've had real mixed results with consoles on my LCD.

My PC Engine looks like utter shit. Not only does the image flicker and jump, but the colors look washed out. Composite is the only option I have for this.

My neobitz supergun looks pretty nice via component, actually. The colors are rich and sharp.

The Wii looks very nice via component @ 480p, including virtual console games. Alien Soldier looks very sharp.

That's all I've tried so far. I know this goes without saying, but component really fixes a lot of the SD issues I was having on my TV(a Toshiba).

I was surprized at how good the Saturn looked on my 42" LCD, where as the PS2 looks kinda crappy (S-vid, and I've only played Grandia 3 on the LCD)

I also am converting systems to use on the arcade cab, but I still think of buying a CRT for those systems, something about needing to sit on the couch to play console games...

I have a 27" Toshiba CRT for my "retro" stuff. Stuff looks absolutely beautiful via colorstream(component) on it. Especially the supergun.

all my older stuff is played on a sony crt 27inch wega. Its only three years old so I imagine I'll be fine for some time (my last crt is 16 years old and still runs though poorly) my lcd is nice for newer games (ps2 and up)

Currently I play everything on my 27" CRT. Once I get the new LCD display, I plan on only have last generations systems on that tv. Also will have the Supergun on it too.

maybe I should try to dig up another CRT TV then... When my POS phillips dies or gets punched out by me.

But for what I'd pay, id rather just buy a 27 Multisync.

Getting a good 27" crt before there gone is a no brainier. I bought my JVC Iart for $375 in '04 and I'm still impressed with component & Svideo signals.

yeah i can understand the problem. when companies stopped making CRT 4:3 I bought a 36" panasonic tau. use it for all the older consoles really. its nice, but nothing will beat my old 24" Vega. that thing was eye crack. if i see one on Craigs's list its mine.

when i was shopping for a 30" widescreen tube a couple of weeks ago, it was an ordeal. maybe my searching is off, but other than a toshiba clearance here and there they're fading away as well.

i bought a new arcade monitor for cheap the other day. i guess we're saying goodbye to tubes all together. too bad.

Will the newer OLED tvs do any good? I dont see "old" video stuff ever working correctly on the current lcd tvs.

I have a Mitsubishi 50" SD Big Screen and guarantee you that I'll be playing games on it until they stop selling parts to repair it. :)

My friend just bought a HD tube television at Circuit City. Has component, HDMI, S-video, and composite. He only spent $460.

XRGB2/2+/3 unit will solve your LCD/Plasma HD worries for lowres consoles.

I've tried my xrgb-2+ on several LCDs and my plasma... the results were not very pleasing. However, I guess I'm spoiled by the Sony PVM CRT with RGB. :lolz:
