Marquee LED panel repairable?

My 4-slot MVS was emitting this high pitched whine; that changed pitch when the game was switched. It was driving me nuts till I figured out it was the LED panels in the Marquee! I knew that one of the flat LEDs on each panel was dead (well one just lights up around the edge), but man was it a relief to just pull the plug on the whole display and cut out that whining.

Does anyone know if the panels are adjustable/repairable, or where I might be able to get replacements? The guy at the newly re-opened SNK office said he didn't have any (it was kina a kick to email SNK USA anyway though). I’d be happy to keep mine with the 2 dead lights, it’s just that whining that’s unacceptable.

Thanks for all the expert advice I've been getting from the members here. You people are a godsend.

Thanks for the pointer -- I missed that topic in my search.

I guess they start screaming as they die too. Bummer that SNK doesn't sell the "bulbs" anymore. Fingers crossed that they will someday...

the high pitched noise comes from the inverter, not the actual panels.

No Problem...I never complain I like to help..
To be honest the Search option drives me nuts..

It would be great if they made the MV-ELD bulbs again...I highly doubt it though..

Keep ann eye out for a Semi of fully working light panel on Ebay..

They pop up from time to time...
If you get a light panel with 2 or 3 working MV-ELD bulbs you could put all the working MV-ELD bulbs on one light panel..(providing you have some soldering skills).

If you ever get some I'll walk/help you through the process if you like..

Ah ha, I wondered if it wasn't the bulbs themselves that were whining. Excuse my naiveté: but this is the inverter, correct? I’ll have to see about getting a replacement for that part.

New bulbs would be useless if that whining kept up...

Chris, thank you for your kind offer. I’ll take you up on that if I ever come by new panels. Or perhaps I’ll get my German friend to help me order a few from this site in Germany (if they’ll ship to America).

To be honest I'm not sure if that's called the Inverter..but I'm pretty sure that's where the whining comes from..

The bulbs being blown out makes that part whine. That part is not broken so it doesen't need to be replaced..

you don't need to order them in germany, just look around at pc and car modding shops, they're actually cheaper in USA too.

Two of my bulbs where blown and I had that whine until I replaced the two blown bulbs ..Now with 4 working MV-ELD bulbs the whine is gone..

I "think" it's a electrical current thing..
Whereas the the MV-ELA LCD Circuit Board is pushing current that's not being used due to non working bulbs and causing the whine.

Ah ha... I'll have to keep an eye out for a few of those jammies then. Since they burn out over time it seems to make more sense to wait it out till I can find new ones rather than try to pick up ones from another MVS.

Oh it doesn't really eat at me or anything; but what are you gonna fix when you've fixed everything else? :D
