Is it normal for me to be hearing a high pitched
humming noise coming from the cd tray of my ps2?

I'm sitting here watching half life, and listening
to a hum coming from my cd tray...it's kinda high
pitched and is quite steady...is this normal or has anyone else had this happen?

th first tip-off I got was a grinding/whistling type noise

make that sound? I got this ps2 in a trade, hope
it's not fucked lol.

I had the same problem with Half-Life in that unit but it was few and far between.

I think its because the disc has more than the usual scratches and it has to slow down the speed of the disc but then again Im not an expert.

I never did have any other games that did it though.

Everything else working fine?

no, it's due to different disc types. Sometimes they fuck up on blue disks, some times silver, sometimes dvd's

Well I know there is nothing wrong with the unit itsself. My original PS2 did it on the same game and the one in question is less than 3 months old and got very little play time.

If you need the info to send it into Sony for a repair let me know..

Here's what I know...
If the game was bought used it may have something on it like the notorious Blockbuster labels..or some plastic coating.
This will cause the game to hum because it's unbalanced.

Also playing the system while it's standing up/vertical..can cause this hum.

If for some reason the CD is warped slightly it will cause a hum too.

It's basically an off balance thing.

The game came from Blockbuster but I dont recall any labes on the game but then again I really didnt play HL but a few times that I had it.

It may still have a clear coated label on it that will cause it to not spin properly.
