I'm going to make a custom stick... Is cardboard that bad? (NOW WITH PICS!)

Well, I have a stick and buttons, true arcade parts from Happ, and I've always wanted to make my own controller. I abandoned that project when I modded 2 DC sticks. But now that I still have the parts around and I love messing with this things...

The fact is that most likely I won't finish using this stick, so I don't want to spend any more money. I'm missing a place for putting the parts. I have absolutely no idea about working with wood. I saw a plastic case with aluminum cover in an electronics store that would do very well, but it costs 30€...

So well... I have a shoe's cardboard box that is very hard and firm, so I'm thinking on making the holes on it... So what do you think? If it doesn't work well I can just remove the parts and that's all. Another problem is that I don't have any tool to drill holes big enough for the buttons, my bigger bit is around 1 cm diameter and I would need around 3... I saw a bit of that size in the store, but it costs 20€... So that's another reason for the cardboard, as I hope I would be able to make the holes more easily on it...

Any suggestion?

Drill a bunch of holes with the small drill bit in a circle then use a chisel or knife to round the edges..
You can get a lot of the work done with that small drill bit..It's just timely.

You could draw the cicle in the wood and drill small holes around the edge of the circle until the center of the wood falls through.

I don't know what other tools you have.
Do you have a jigsaw?

The cardboard will not be strong enough..
but you could use it as a template or as a practice run before you tackle the wood..

cardboard will fall apart from the sweat of your hands and the movements on the surface.

lol ....... lol ........ lol .......No seriously man, are you serious? Why did you post this? You should have kept this idea to yourself. Its too goofy. But thanks for the laugh. I owe you one. You could go down to the local auto shop and get some fiberglass reson and coat the box with that. That should make it a bit more hard. It would look strange though. Anyway good luck. :D lol drool

One of those litre plastic ice cream tubs maybe, sounds dumb I know. Some have quite thick plastic and are fairly rigid and about the right size. You dont even need a drill, melt the holes with a soldering iron.
Im sure it would work better than a shoebox
And you get to eat the icecream first drool_2

I actually took some cardboard and made a joystick that i put my happ stick and buttons in. Although it was only to see if i liked the button arrangement, not to actually play on...

If you have a good hardware store in your area you should be able to give them some drawings and for the price of the wood and a moderate fee they can drill all the holes you need and cut the wood. If you are really unsure about woodworking then i would do that. Perhaps you have some friends with wood working tools? My friends dad happens to be a woodshop teacher so i always use his tools when i need to do something. Anyway good luck on the stick and pleaseeee do not use cardboard - you bought nice buttons so why not have them encased in something nice?

lol yeah that dude that made the ghetto supergun setup owned. He was using like a shoebox, some tupperware and God knows what else.

That shoebox is gonna fall apart hella fast though.

I was going to say, didn't Zizzer have one made of cardboard?

It sounds like it would be bad, but it actually looks alright.

LOL, I'm sorry and no offence intended but I find this thread quite funny... Anyone tried a cornflakes packet? :)

Seriously though what I would say is that cardboard is a great tool for designing a prototype stick but at the end of the day your better off building it out of some nice wood afther you have the rough idea in cardboard.

I have actually build my own sticks and JAMMA harnes and have FULL instructions you can follow if you want to make something like I have.

Follow the url....

Hmmm..I was surprised they look pretty good..With a little paint you would never know..

They are inventive..
I would tear the joystick right out of them though..I really push on them hard ..

I had some thicker cardboard around here that may hold up..but Its still gotta be cut somehow..

I like the way the box looks..With a MAS/MVS overlay it would look cool..
That is hard core..and very inventive..cool..

Well, I finished the stick in that cardboard box (not the ones for shoes, I bought another very hard one) on Monday. I'll try to post some pics, and I think it looks much nicer than the other ones pictured here.

I think the problem of it is not the cardboard, it has resisted very well the play, but that maybe I didn't place the buttons correctly due to the vertical dimension of the box being to narrow. Maybe I'll dismount it (all the cabling can be reused) and mount it somwhere else.

Stay tuned for my pics mr_t

OK, I have four pics waiting to be uploaded somewhere for your eyes pleasure. I have problems with my free personal webpages, so if somebody is willing to host them for a while just tell me your e-mail and I'll send them right away. I might be able to upload them myself if I solve that problems in the following days.

what would fiberglass resin do? would it be like liquid fiberglass? and also can you get it in different colors? I want to make my joystick metallic blue. I kind of like the idea. of corse my joystick I'm going to build is going to be overly advanced in casing and layout because my las one was a box. it was too big and had the wires everywhere. I'm gonna relay all the elcetroni signals thorugh a wiring block or something for my new one. Because last time the controller pcb from my joystick was just hanging on the wires above the bottom of the box. and a few wires snapped soon. anyone help me with some electronics?
