I just got a practically brand new toploader; unpacked it, hooked it up with s-video and gold tip stereo cables. everything was working great, then about 2 hours into playing, the sound fx cut out [not the music though]. so i tried rebooting, and powering down. when i turn the system on now, the neo cd logo screen has no sound, but i can play the music fine off the cd, and in game [playing last hope]. and it looks like sound is coming out of both L and R channels? any ideas? thanks.

Sounds like it overheated a little, my neo cd used to do that if I played 2 or more hours as well. Try it again tomorrow, it will probably be back to normal.

You can always try a can of component cooler to try and narrow down the problem to a specific IC. If you can then that IC can be replaced.

Another fix would be to put a heatsink on the chip to help remove the heat from it.

thanks guys; i was hoping when i turned the system on this morning it was going to start up with the neo cd chime, however, it did not. I'll try again when I get home from work tonight...i probably gave the unit a bit of a work out.

alright; well im still only getting music; no sound fx, no boot up chime.

I'm pretty surprised, I thought the toploader was supposed to be the reliable model. The console is in an open area on a flat wood surface, so it should not have been a heat issue, unless 3 hours of play is just generally too much for he neo cd, which is dissapointing [This unit is in very good condition too].

I thought leaving the console off over night would restore the sound; is it possible something blew, or that it's loose solder? thanks.

Open up your neo cd and look for 2 connector of 3 cables that are conected do the mother board. One is for the cd audio other is for the sound effects, it may be loose or something.
