i was checking this out:

i was wondering what it does that makes it special, aren't s video cables good enoough and more practical?

Some of the generic brand s-video cables for PS2 dont use the chroma and luma lines, some actually use the composite out and convert it to s-video. Actually all systems have some company that makes cables like that.

I had the hardest time finding a correct s-video cable for my N64 as the previous 3 used the composite pin.

speaking of cables in general, (you should probably know)

the Dreamcast did Sega made S video cables for it?

is sony the only one that uses this type of adapter?

BTW, i have some monster cables for the Xbox, i wasn't too impressed by it both s video and componente, somehow i felt the image better on component for the ps2 (both using kof 2002) same game.

what's the best way to get component and s video out of the regular xbox?

There are several Svideo cables for the PSX, but in my opinion that little AV adapter in the first post is the best. It has some pretty high quality connectors, and you can hook up some high grade Svideo and stereo connectors to it if you choose.

Also, it is a must if you have a Guncon 1. It has to be plugged into the composite video out, and if you are using Svideo this is the only way to do it. Also, if you use component instead that box has a passthrough, so you can still use a Guncon 1 with component out perfectly. That's the reason I have one.

The Dreamcast does have Svideo available, and I definately recommend it. If you can get your hands on the official Sega VGA box it has VGA, S-Video, Composite, and RCA outs on it. There are regular Svideo cables too that can be had for a lot less.

I have a Monster component cable out of my Xbox because I couldn't find the official Microsoft kit. I know what you are saying, it's good, but the video signal isn't nearly as clean as the PS2 signal. I'm not certain it's the cables though, my PS2 cables are Monster as well. I'm not a Monster whore, btw, they were the cheapest cables I could find on Ebay when I got the new TV.

Microsoft's official Xbox cables are called "HD packs" or something like that. They were little boxes much like that sony one where you could plug your own cables into it. The older one had Svideo and digital audio outs, the newer one had component out too. It's easy to find the Svideo ones, hard to find the component ones. I've never gotten my hands on the component pack, but the Svideo pack was good stuff.

*edit*
I just noticed you compared KOF 2002. I haven't played that game, but in general the Xbox ports of Neo games are blurry as hell compared to the PS2 versions. I guess it's the graphical filter. The AOF collection uses scanlines to make the image look almost exactly like the Neo original, the Xbox Neo games I've played just blur the images all to hell instead.

i know the xbox version of teh game is blurry, nevertheless usually what improves on SNK games (at least on ps2) are colors mostly.

that and usually from RCA to component i feel like im going from a badly recorded VCR tape to a sharp looking video (and vibrant colors)....

on the xbox, i went from the badly recorded VCR tapes to some badly recorded VCR tapes with vibrant colors. i still felt i needed 1 more layer for clearer picture.

im gonna try to snag a dreamcast s video cable, i want to do comparisons on it. i did VGA with the dreamcast, but i've yet to do one on the same set.... (long and complicated story).....

BTW i've seen the Microsoft Kit for component and S video im gonna try to see if i get ahold of one, just to see if there's any difference.

Honestly, on the Dreamcast if you really want some great video, get the RGB cable. If you are using a TV that only does component and S-video then buy the RGB cable and a RGB>YUV component converter that is decent. I will admit it is a little pricey at $100-$150, but it is very nice for the DC compared to when I had it using a S-video 1st party cable even. Also, you can use the converter for all your game systems from Genesis and up into component video. Only downside is having to hunt down RGB cables for all your systems, especially the older ones.

This also does wonders on any PS1 system and the N64 (custom hack). Saturn for some reason has the best S-video output on a system period. So component is almost not necessary it at least.

Also, what kind of TV are you using?? This can make a huge difference without having to to go RGB/YUV. I suggest for a SDTV a Sony WEGA or something with a built in digital comb filter that works for S-video and composite really well.
