Hello all! I really need some help here. Since I am getting back into games, I figure might as well do it right the first time. Now on to the question:

I need to either create an RGB cable for these consoles, or purchase them outright. I saw on Goldenshop's web site they are selling a SCART switch box. I also know that every new system has a SCART cable available for it. My question is, are these the same cables used for the XRGB2/XRGB2+ device? If so then cool. Can any of these cables be used on, say a Wells Gardner arcade monitor? I see on Ebay that there is a 25"-27" VGA arcade monitor that some use for MAME cabinets. Can this be connected to the XRGB2/XRGB2+ device. I need some solid answers please so I can start my purchases. Any technically inclined user please email me or post here. I really need help on this. The systems I will be using are:

SNES
Dreamcast
Mega Drive model 1
PSX (older version)
Sega Saturn
NEO GEO Cartridge
Playstation 2
Master System (not sure if RGB works)
NEC SuperGrafx (not sure if RGB works)

Thanks,

GAMEFAN

You're probably best off getting RGB SCART cables for the European market; the output of these is definitely suitable for RGB monitors (I've done it) -- but do make sure they are *RGB* SCART cables, since SCART also emcompasses composite video, which is no good for you.

What I did, to avoid chopping up cables, was to build a JAMMA -> SCART cable convertor.

Some consoles don't output RGB -- SNES and N64 are two major examples. Even the Gamecube doesn't, although I hear rumours that the European version will do.

Cool, thanks for the info. SO now I know which cables to get but how do I make a JAMMA to SCART cable? I royaly suck at electronics. What about those arcade monitors with VGA output? Will those work on the XRGB2+?

Yes, Scart cables almost always have RGB signals off them, but not all the time, also he wants this for a XRGB-2+, Scart cables will not work with the XRGB-2+ out of the box, you need to swap all the cables from the inside, (R/G/B/Sync/ground/Audio Left/right)

U.S. SNES DOES have RGB, however depending on the model it will require either resistors or caps, because the signals are not "standard"

PC Engine does not ouput RGB out of the box, but with a few modifications it will, (You have to tap the signals off the inside, and add an RGB AMP)

Gamesx has all the basic information you need for RGB.

That is correct, I will not be able to use Euro SCART cables for the XRGB2+, but I can use 21 pin Japanese RGB cables. My question is, do they make a RGB swith box for the 21-pin Japanese cables? Last question, what would be the easiest way to get the best possible picture for all game systems? Anyone here make RGB cables? If so please email me as I am looking for some.

Yes, I have seen Japanese RGB standard switchboxes from Micomsoft, the same people that make the XRGB upscan converter, I am sure you would have to special order them from an importer, what RGB cables are you looking for?, I may have some extras. How big of a monitor are you looking for, I also have a European 14" SCART monitor.

Hello Devilman78, thanks for replying. I am looking for RGB cables for the following:

NEO GEO AES
Saturn
Playstaion model 900x
Sega Dreamcast
SNES
Genesis Model 1

I am trying to connect it to a monitor that would be easy. Do you have pics of your 14" monitor? I am really looking to connect this to an Arcade 25"-27" monitor. Any ideas as to how?

I have connected a XRGB2 to a Neo Candy RGB monitor, there was a problem though;

The RGB signals the monitor is expecting are stronger than what the XRG2, or what a home console outputs, so the picture either lacked a real true black color (too grey), or bright colors, I could adjust the monitor/XRGB2 to show bright colors or real dark black, but not both at the same time, this could be fixed with the correct rgb amp, but I have not seen one comercially available for this purpose, that is the reason I never used that setup.

If you're looking for a larger RGB monitor, get a Sony XBR25, these have a nonstandard RGB input, but with some hacking can be made to work with home consoles\Jamma boards.

I have one and it's a damn fine monitor, the screen is almost flat, it's black 25" (I believe they also make 27"" unfortunately these are a bit old, and cannot be purchased new anymore. Try E-bay.

I'll let you know what cables I have later, I'll try to get pics of the monitor also.

Mine is dead, I need to get it repaired as it requires parts I cannot locate,

Thanks for getting back to me devilman78. I think I know what monitor you are talking about. I seen some on Ebay called Sony PVM2025 or PVM2027. These are professional grade monitors that have a VTR outpus along with S-Video and Composite. Am I correct? Yeah I remember a very long time ago I had my PSX connected to a wells gardner monitor and it looked awesome! The cable was hacked from a 21-pin RGB cord and it was only going to be used with the PSX. Geez, I didn't think this was going to be so complicated.

I used to use a Commodore 1024ST monitor (I still have it, just don't use it so much any more, no I have a 32" TV with RGB in :p ), it has phono sockets for composite, and a D socket for RGB. I had to build my own cables, and I don't know whether the socket followed any kind of standard (the pinout was documented in the manual).

This was sold for the Amiga market, so I expect there are still a few out there you could get hold of.

Thanks for all the relies everyone, I really appreciate it! As of now, it looks like I am going the way of Arcade Games. They just look better and are the real deal (at least for STV and CPS2). Wish me luck!
