Cap it.
Close the gates.
Now. I mean it. Seriously.
Institute an entrance exam that demands knowledge of SNK history. Anything.
The flow of tards is quite high right now.

This thread turned funny, but still, if we don't allow new members --who's going to do those jobs the rest of us feel entitled not to do? This cyber-fruit isn't going to pick itself.

require new members to submit an application to qube for review. if the majority of members he lets through turn out to be quality over the course of say 6 months, grant him moderator status.

I've seen closed communities die off slowly before. It happened on DL's Yahoo club, and it happened to my PSO community. I know the original post was made in jest (sort of?), but there's got to be an alternative.

Start them off in a newbie section of sorts, and the cooler ones get to post with the rest of us.

The way I see it....

.... noobs come... they either survive... or they don't....

... I have to confess... I feel that in 10 years time... we'll all be complaining about the quality of the new members...

... sadly... we'll be old and pretty twisted and bitter by then...

.. we've discussed this in chat many times... twalden, kernow, friends and I will prob grow old ... well.. older in chat... and think that you youngsters out there need to sort of grow up some...

We should judge noobs in a year after they join... and if they don't contribute... then get shot of the accounts...

Maybe it's time to clean up the members listings... and not keep it like some over bloated prostitue high on drugs and looking for her next fix by selling her smelly fanny crack...

xROTx

PS. Bio_s idea is pretty sound too.... /me posts a full frontal nude shot... and gets a paid 2 week Holiday.....

The Tech Support board is the best one. I see people with 1 or 2 posts come in there all the time with very reasonable, valid Neo questions. If you closed it up, unregistered people with problems wouldn't be able to get help.

Don't be silly, he wouldn't be a neo-geo dot com moderator if he did that.

on topic, I think we should not close the gates completely. Like GD, I've seen good online communities wither and vanish after they changed to a closed usergroup, a bbs is nothing without new blood.

Chasing the idiot newbies (not all of them are stupid of course) around can be fun too.

Then again, if Shawn decides to make excessive stupidity a bannable offense I'll join Bio's campaign with my Dork Zapper... :drool_2:

.
.

Last Hope? Well... it's a mixed bag. I appreciate the work Neo Dev put into it but I'm not in agreement with their pricing and the cart sac'ing, that's a really egoistic and brutal way of creating a new game that does not really look and feel new at all.

Randomly give the power to drop the banhammer to a different member every day. If they don't discover they have the power thats their fault.

Should make things a LOT more interesting.

Tiptonium edged me out of a FF3 cart once. I wanted it so I could play it. He bought it so he could gut it.

Still hurts to think about it.

I think any new member that joins from this point forward should be locked in an initiation thread and the only one allowerd to post in it beside them should be Wizkid and Dark Andy. If they can survive that for say 3 months they earn the right to post in General Discission.

Just a thought.

Yes, you should have to get jumped in.

I wasn't serious about no new members, like I said, the retarded noob factor just seems abnormally high right now, between this KanYokazotaku motherfucker and the "workin' man" in the Least Formally Edu thread.

This thread has generated some good ideas though.

i know i am a n00b, but may be there should be like a partial membership n00b zone, that consists of the general discussion, technical, 24bit, handheld and nextgen forums as you have it, so that there is the ability for n00bs to post questions and have the current members be able to answer them. Perhaps then after they have been there for a while a current member could sponsor or nominate them for full membership? Thus keeping the rest of the site separate for just the people that you deem fit?

You expose new people to 3 months of that, and think of what you are training them to be.

I think that all of the ideas presented here are excellent... for scaring off any new potential members, be they idiot noobs or otherwise. I can't really comment on the situation here as I am very new myself, but I can't imagine it's any worse than any other public internet forum. That's what happens when 12 year olds and people with no life and have nothing better to do are allowed to use the internet. If you want to gate off the community, it will surely slowly die as new members will be few and far between, especially if the requirements are strict. Sure, you most likely not get any more idiot noobs, but you will also lose many serious and intelligent potential members in doing so. I know I wouldn't have bothered joining this community if it were some sort of exclusive, elitist group with strict requirements to get in, and I don't consider myself to be an idiot noob although others might disagree.

Like many I didn't own a Neo-Geo growing up as it was too costly, and there were no arcades near where I lived. Now that prices have gone down and I have more money, I am able to buy some Neo-Geo games and enjoy what I have missed out on throughout the years. This is one of the biggest and best communities for getting started with Neo-Geo stuff be it tech questions, buying/selling stuff, or just general discussions about the history/games, reminiscing, sharing experiences, and various other topics. I may not have much experience with the Neo-Geo or knowledge about its hardware, games, and legacy, but am quick and eager to learn. There's really no other place quite as good as this one for everything SNK and Neo-Geo related, so please don't rob me and others like me who have a legitimate interest and desire to contribute of a place this awesome just because it's getting overrun by noobs lately. Noobs will always be on any public internet place and even in some private ones no matter what you do. Although in my experience I have found that if you pay little attention to them, the majority of them eventually go elsewhere to pester people who will actually react to their idiocy. When you are patient, what is left behind from the slew of noobs is a handful of serious dedicated people who might have been put off from joining the community had there been strict requirements and restrictions to becoming a full member.

Really if this problem was to be solved we would have to implement my idea for the internet I've had for years. Make everyone who wants to use the internet take an intelligence test of sorts every year and split the internet into two levels. One where the only ones who are allowed in are the people who can actually type intelligibly (very important requirement) and contribute meaningful things can have discussions and conduct business without fear of having to deal with idiots. Then we have the other level where all of the noobs are stuck and are free to flame each other and compete in idiocy to see who is the supreme tard to rule over the other tards. Noobs cannot transcend into the upper level of the internet unless they have proven themselves to be capable of intelligent conversation, and I'm pretty sure those already in the upper level wouldn't dare to tread in the idiots' territory. Then everyone would be happy, but alas it's not very realistic. One can only dream, right?

Just my 2 albeit very lenghty cents.
