Can any here mod controllers to work with AES systems?

After finding out that !Arcade! could modify any controller to work with an AES, I emailed them and asked how much they would charge to do my PC controller. Unfortunately though, they aren't doing controller mods at the moment. So my question is this, can anyone here at the forums do controller mods? Perhaps the members that are great at modding systems could also do the same with controllers? I'm asking this because I'm not really comfortable with the arcade type joystick the AES comes with and I feel that $50.00+ is a bit high for unboxed Neo CD pads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok
you need :
a japanese sega saturn pad,this pad is truely great for fighters!,
an old broken neo geo pad, because of the cable, or you get one in a pc store, i think apple uses the same pad connector like the neo geo,
a solder iron,since you must solder on an smd chip inside of the saturn pad, you will need some solder skills,
and at least one hour time!

then you will see the 50$ !ARCADE! wants for the mod is way overpriced!

ok here i go:

plug out your neo geo pad and look at the end of
the cable on the connector.
there are 15 pins/holes, the count starts from up-right to
down-left.

1=common
2=nc(not used)
3=select
4=D button
5=B button
6=right
7=down
8=nc
9=D button(again)
10=nc
11=start
12=C button
13=A button
14=left
15=up

so far so good..

now for the saturn pad:

inside there is one single smd chip with 24 marked pins.
you only must solder the neo geo cable directly on the pins of the chip.
here's the instruction:
(the used buttons from the saturn pad are A,B,X,Y,L,R(or start, if you want)

neo geo cable sega saturn pad
pins pins
4 to 6
7 to 1
12 to 13
6 to 4
5 to 10
15 to 3
13 to 11
14 to 2
3 to 5 ( or 14 start for start)
11 to 7
and finally
look at the top right of the saturn pad, there are 9 solder
points, this points are holding, and connecting, the original
saturn pad cable, wich you should desolder first, in order
to have more space for the neo geo cable.
now connect pin 1 from the neo cable to the first/highest of these
solder points(this is for the +5v) and....
now you have finished you mod,put the screws back in the pad case
and enjoy your new pad!

To achieve the best configuration especially for older fighters, where you have to push B+C I suggest:

Saturn - Neo

A - A
B - B
C - C
X - C
Y - D
Z - B
R - B
L - Select
Start - Start

;)

You can now press most common button combinations like B+C very comfortable with just your thumb! Very good for the Real Bout Series!

Hey, I want to adapt a Saturn stick (I think internally is identic to a saturn pad, I can compare them if needed) to work with my sgun for both JAMMA games (3/6 buttons) and MVS (I still have to wire the D button in my sgun for that).
Check <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001788" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001788</a>

I guess I have to do more or less the same, but the buttons are different... First of all the controller ports in my sgun are Neo Geo like, but I hope I can buy a female 15 pin connector and don't have to sacrifice a Neo Geo pad.
Is it imprescindible to attach the wires to the chip? Can I just replace the plug that goes to the console soldering each wire to the right spot on the 15 pin connector?
My desired layout is:
Saturn stick|MVS (JAMMA)
X A(1)
Y B(2)
Z C(3)
R D
A (4)
B (5)
C (6)
Start Start(Start)
L Select

Well, the last one is only in case it also worked in my Neo Geo CD (I hardly doubt it)

Any info/hint will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

I can do the mod for you, but you would have to provide the parts. I'd charge something reasonable, too. Let me know, okay?

I have modded 2 Sega Genesis Controllers into Neo Pads before and they both turned out good. It just takes a little time and patience. And it's messy fucking work, let me tell you. And I'd guarantee it for a few months too I guess, just in case.

what about modding a psx pad... I was gonna try this and I have some connectors spare and everything - but I haven't ever attempted this before. Would it be easy to do? :)

Thanks for your offer, Rade, but I think I prefer to do the mod myself. Also take care that you live in Canada and I in Spain. Thanks anyway.
(BTW Rade, have you checked your board status? looks like it has something to do with me ;) )

DFX, I think that internally my Saturn stick (from Ascii) is the same as the regular Saturn pad. Anyway I can open them both and compare.
In any case what I'm intersted to know is that if it's OK to just cut the plug in the pad, intall the 15-pin plug and reattach all wires accordingly.

Kazuya, the pad I use right now with my sgun is a converted third party PSX pad. I've opened it and it looks very simple to be moded. I don't know what about other PSX pads.

Well, I've opened both my Saturn stick and pad and they are quite different. The stick has a square chip with 10 legs per site, that makes 40. However I can clearly see the 4 wires that control the direction. If I can put a wire on the points of the PCB that control the buttons I think I can make it work. Have a look at my last post on this thread <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001788" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001788</a> for my theory. I have to experiment a bit.

I've modded a PSX controller. It isn't nearly as comfortable as a Sega pad though. It was a pain in the ass though since the internal space is really limited.

Well, I guess that would be possible, just that quite difficult. Check:
<a href="http://www.chads.arcade.btinternet.co.uk/Supergun/supergunIndex.htm" target="_blank">http://www.chads.arcade.btinternet.co.uk/Supergun/supergunIndex.htm</a>

for info on how to mod a regular Genesis controller to a sgun, I hope you can adapt it to your goal. Good luck.

I'm just bumping this post.
Also, take care that is not needed to use the cable from another Neo Geo controller. You can buy a regular PC joypad extension cable for 5$ and use the female part. However you would have to cut the plastic end in order to make it fit in the deeper socket of your console.

Also, when you do this mod, do you actually remove the chip or leave it there?
Because in this page it recommends to remove it <a href="http://www.alamone.com/jamma.html#saturn" target="_blank">http://www.alamone.com/jamma.html#saturn</a> (this page is worth a visit it all)

Come on, I've bought an extra Saturn pad for only 3€ and I might try this mod on it. Can somebody please answer the questions in my previous post?

Thanks in advance.

I emailed neogeousa.com and asked them if they could mod my Saturn extension cable to work on the Neo and they said they could. In essence, it would become an adapter to fit any Saturn control to the Neo. They never replied when I asked them how much though. If you can do it, this seems like the best way to go since you wouldn't have to permanently convert your control.

Well yes, definately that is possible but it involves a lot of electronic stuff. You know, all console pads (but Neo) have a chip inside that codifies the button data. So you need to mount a circuit that decodifies it.

Anybody with some soldering skills can mod a controller (some are harder than others, the DC stick or any other stick that uses microswitches is the easiest) to work with neo. It's even possible to make 2 cable come from it, one for Neo and want for the original console.
However to constrct an adaptor you need to know quite a lot about electronics. Or have money enough to ask ngusa to make it for you. In any case I'm sure they will charge a lot. However if you have a friend with knowledge enough, you could explain him what you want, and using the info in this links <a href="http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=002329" target="_blank">http://www.neo-geo.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=002329</a> you may be lucky.

Good luck. Anyway Saturn controllers are so cheap that I prefer to convert them directly.

Well, I finally managed to mod my Saturn controller. I removed the chip inside and soldered the wires in the places where the chip legs were. Man, they were tiny spots. Also be very gentle when removing the chip, if not traces from the board will go away with it and that makes the solder spots even smaller.

Finally, I had 2 Saturn pads: one black bought brand new, that actually had the chip, and a white one (supposed to be original but Japanese) that was in the inside quite different from the black one. The board looked simpler, and there was no chip like the other. All button connections go to a place on the board that has like a drop of "black glue". So I had to mod the black one.

So I thought the white wasn't original. It says Sega on the outside, but not in the inside board. Also I remember that I had another like it for my Saturn many years ago, and when playing Castlevania the directional cross broke. So are they of inferior quality?

Is the same for a PAL Saturn pad?
