Child's Play 2008, how about getting NG.com involved?

I've been thinking about this for the last few days.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could organize some kind of holiday benefit on behalf of our community? When I thought of some deserving charities, Child's Play immediately came to mind. Check out the site, and read the FAQ. I can't think of a better organization to donate to.

Here's the deal.

Since 2003, we've set up and organized Child's Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 40 hospitals worldwide. In four short years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.

That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the millions of kids that children's hospitals care for each year. So we're doing it again this year, only this time we've expanded Child's Play to more hospitals around US and the globe so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.

Child's Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff, we've set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital's list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape. Imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays, getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.

We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. We are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good.

How amazing is that?

I posted this hoping others from our community might want to get involved. In my mind, I see Child's Play recieving a large donation from Neo-Geo.com on behalf of its members, perhaps in memory of Clint Gorman (Jigen) as well as SNK4Ever and Sifl. As someone who spent time in and out of the hospital, I can think of no better tribute to Clint..

I was thinking we could do a Paypal collection, then use the funds to do a group buy for a single or multiple hospitals on behalf of our community. I would be willing to help out of course, and I think it would be awesome to see Shawn do a little something as well. Maybe a banner? Or a special rank/badge for donors? I'm just brainstorming here.

I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks about this.

Charity shit makes me cringe.

Something like this is a bit more admirable than the Boog event, but still I know not everyone is in the right time with money to "donate".

Biomotor actually wanted to get this started last year, and had Shawn's blessing --unfortunately it was too late to get it off the ground. I believe he plans to do it for real this year. Contact him! :)

Heh, I was just wondering about this again the other day. The only dislike I have is for PayPal skimming money off the top of funds that are supposed to go to charity, unless they do such transactions free of charge.

Last year, hospitals submitted wish lists to the CP site, and people could go there, click on the hospital they wanted to help (I chose Children's Mercy Hospital, where Clint unfortunately had to spend a lot of time), and then they would be taken to Amazon.Com where they could purchase items from the hospital's wish list and have them shipped directly to the hospital. I don't think the hospitals have submitted their lists for this year yet.

I was thinking something along the lines of people purchasing the items and having them shipped to the hospital of their choice (I am going with Children's Mercy Hospital again), because that way our money doesn't get reduced by transaction fees, and we can pick and choose items to send to the hospitals that we KNOW are good, and not crap that was added to the list because someone working on the list heard that Bratz were popular with kids last year and the game shares the name.

If people can provide proof that they have done something alone those lines, say a screenshot of the receipt, I was thinking of having a drawing afterwards for people that donated, with prizes supplied by myself. I would try to keep them SNK or at least game related, but they would be more of an additional pat on the back to the people that would donate to this kind of thing anyway, rather than an incentive to get people to donate that normally wouldn't.

Awesome work Wayne.

Obviously we still need to work out the specifics, but it's good to get this rolling now with plenty of time left before the holidays. Glad to see so many on board already. It warms my jaded gamer heart. :crying:

I'm down for reals.

Great idea Ghost.

EDIT: Is there a possible way to organize it by state (or region) so that members can make sure their dollars are going to a hospital in their area? I'm down for charity in any respect, but I'd really like to see it go toward the Children's Center here.

Yep, you can donate to individual hospitals on their list. I think you can either Paypal them or view their list on Amazon.com and buy items from there.

I was kind of hoping we could do a big NG.com group buy, but I understand if that doesn't work well with different regions and all that.

Are we donating individually then, or are we doing some sort of group donation? If it's individual I'll hop onto that site and donated next Wednesday when I'm payed again.

I just remembered this today. I've gone ahead and donated to the only hospital that they had on the list for Florida.

I'm sending them a random DS game and Nintendo Monopoly.

Awesome sir. I applaud you.

I'll be completing my donation next week sometime. I was really hoping to do one big NG.com donation, but it just didn't seem to be in the cards this year. Maybe next year we can do something big?

I think that a group purchase would've been great. Hopefully we'll be better organized next year.

I always try to donate in the neighborhood of $150 at this time of year. I did $100 towards feeding the homeless at Thanksgiving time and this nicely finishes off the remaining $50.

Just adding this so people don't think I'm just making stuff up.
