I thought there was already a topic here about it but I guess not... which surprises me considering how much love there is for Alpha 2 on this forum!

http://ggpo.net/blog/

GGPO is by far the best optimized netcode for fighting games, ever. It uses a modified Final Burn Alpha emulator and provides netplay with only 1 frame of lag, no matter where in the world your opponent is (to compensate for high pings though, the emulator kicks in autoframeskip, so the gameplay is a little more choppy). When playing people in your town or state, it's almost indistinguishable from playing offline. It's really just that good. New features have been added in recent versions too, like the option to watch other people playing their matches live. And the newest feature is the GGPO Dojo, which contains streamable/downloadable replays of every match played on the server (well almost every, there's a little bug with it right now). And the program's still in an alpha state, and has nowhere to go but up...

Sounds too good to be true? Well, here's the major drawback - at the moment only two games are supported: Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 1. Only a handful of games are being supported at the moment so that Ponder (the developer) can focus on getting more features working and ironing out the bugs before adding more games. Despite this, there are promises of more games being added, and rumor has it that an SNK game will be added very soon for testing purposes too - most likely King of Fighters '98. Online lag-free KoF '98... doesn't that just get you wet?

So yeah, more of you guys need to get up in this if you aren't already. And then I can destroy you all with Zangief. :mr_t:

if the emulator works fine offline but it's not working online (getting a black screen when you try challenging someone / accept a challenge), then it is probably an issue with your ports not being open. Ports 6000-6010 need to be opened for UDP. Check http://www.portforward.com for help on opening them with your router (if you don't have a router, I think it's handled through the firewall?)

i played some sfa2 on it a while back and it was indeed good.

i gotta update the program and see if i can remember my login.

i think guitar hero 3 may have used a similar method of doing things, because i havent noticed lag yet in that game.

i'm hoping crapcom works with this guy to implement his code into super turbo hd, and any other future 2d fighters they decide to release with online play.

1 frame of lag? Sounds fishy. Like "almost always", as in, we're just doing Doom-type networking so as long as you can get one packet across in under 50ms...

I have seen you on there BBH, but I can't seem to ever start a match. I have tried all faq, port forwarding, port triggering, opening ports, etc. The only thing that works me is unhooking my router and running it direct.
Perhaps I need a new router...

is it d3dx9_z8.dll? If so try downloading it from here:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_28

and put it in \Program Files\GGPO Client.

Or just reinstall DirectX maybe? Of course, that's if it's a problem with d3dx9_z8.dll.

I finally managed to play a few matches and got my ass beat down pretty bad. I had to be challenged though.

I'm not saying it doesn't work and/or seem lag-free, but that claim seems a little ambitious.

Plus, frameskip is equivalent to lag because you can't enter moves anyway.

The matches play well.
But I get awful input lag,

Still a nice proggy.

SpamYou... is totally clueless when it comes to online games.

On topic, yes ggpo is nice, I've played some sfa2 against some fellow euros and some of them have played some transatlantic matches which also worked ok.

Gotta ge me a usb pad/stick tho, also I'm quite sure ppl here would/will kick my ass :D

a wise man (the WHP US champ lol) told me that if you want to learn how to play any 2d game competitively get GGPO and play alpha 2. the people on there are so good. I actually tried it a few times and its great. I left my USB converter at the last chicago area gathering but as soon as I get it back I'm going to give this a try again. I can't wait for KOF 98 to show up on here.

Because I doubt the ability of a homebrew program to deliver a constant <= 1 frame lag under any network connection?

Fear the hammer man !

Come play me ! PM is ok.

I've been trying man :( As excited as I was about this build, the server's been buggy as hell lately - lots and lots of freezes, weird spectating lag, etc.

I'm not sure why we can never get a game going, either. Judging by our distance it'd probably be a little choppy, but I've had "playable" connections like that. It's no good if it never starts up though :(

Not sure if SS2 is going to happen since it's getting a release on Live, and they don't want to compete with that.

Garou though... holy shit that would be so hype. I've always wanted to learn the game better and this would give me the perfect excuse.

Well, I've played with people of the US of A almost perfectly and with others terribly.

I find it also funny that I get a little lag sometimes from a neighbor of mine while I've played a German guy the other and it was as smooth and fast as a NeoGeo. I was impressed !
