Is the old style joystick hard to get used to with fighting games?

All of my life, I've never cared much about joysticks as I've always loved the standard joypads that most consoles come with. This is also the reason why I've never liked arcade fighting games as the joysticks just seemed to sloppy and unresponsive. Anyway, I just received my AES last week and my first game, Samurai Shodown, should be in tomorrow. Since SS doesn't rely on combos, I should be fine, but how responsive is the Neo Geo joystick with combo heavy fighters? Also, does anyone have any advice they could give me that might help with my understanding of the old style joystick and fighting games? Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, when I first got it, I thought it was pretty tough. Doable, but tough. After I found that the joystick I had wasn't the world's greatest, and got another one, I had a better time. Now I'm fantastic with the stick, and prefer it, in fact. LOVE my joystick! ^_^

Yes , once you get used to useing a joystick for games you'll never go back to the control pads .

To learn how to use joysticks good .....Play lots of games with it !!!

Spike, how did you find out that your joystick wasn't the world's greatest? Maybe that's my problem...or should I conclude that I just can't pull off special moves consistently to save my life? I prefer the stick to the Neo pad, I think, but if I could use a PSX-style pad I would be more confortable because I've had the PSX for years and just got the Neo.

Some moves are easier to pull off with a pad, but in general it's much better using a stick, specially the great old-style. It takes some time to get used to a stick if you have been a pad regular before, but as soon as you feel your fingers magically merge with your old-style Neo stick you won't touch anything else.

For me, a stick is good if it features micro switches, a tight movement scheme (which doesn't give to much, like the DC arcade stick) and a sturdy design, as well as ergonomically arranged buttons.

IMO, the PSX pads are fine for anything but fighting games, YMMV.

Before, i prefered pads (Saturn's are best). But since i got used to my arcade cab's controls, nothing's better than a stick to me.
It is much more accurate.

im sooooooo used to arcade sticks i can barly do a qcf motion on a pad anymore lol but really if u master a stick u have a large advantage over pads

plus when u goto use your new found skills in the arcades your not having any control issues

fighters were designed to be played on sticks :)

I can used both pads and sticks equally well, but I did grow up playing Neo Geo games in the arcade, so I tend to prefer the stick for Neo stuff. Also, if I were you I would stick with the "old style" Neo sticks... I don't think the newer "kidney shaped" versions are as good :)
