Hey everyone. I am considering purchasing an MVS board and the Super Nova from Mas Systems to play some of my old favorite neo geo arcade games :) . I've been trying to research a lot about superguns and boards before I make a purchase but I still have a few un-answered questions I'm hoping you all can help me with.

1. If I get the Super Nova, will it come with everything I need to hook it up?

2. How difficult is it to hook up the board and Super Nova? What does it involve?

3. Is the Super Nova the best way to go for a super gun? Is the HGA better?

Thanks in advance for any help. If I'm missing something else important, please let me know.

gotta respond to this before my account is deleted forever...

1) the MAS SuperNova comes with almost everything you need (I have one as well, I know). Which includes S-Video, RCA audio hookup, composite, external cable for your button for 4 5 and 6, and the two arcade style joysticks. What it does still need whatsover is the Test button and the Service Button.

2) MAS SuperNova already comes with the JAMMA standard harness that can fit JAMMA edge connectors from almost any JAMMA PCBs out there. Keep note however that there are PCBs with edge connectors not JAMMA and to have those working for the MAS SN you need a JAMMA adapter to be used on your JAMMA harness (the MAS SuperNova has JAMMA harness already)...

3) Have some feedbacks from Peeps here about a product called

Sigma that you might wanna check out as well before going with the MAS or HGA, OK?!?

...or JHendrix might be able to help you out on building a supergun yourself. JHendrix is around here somewhere look him up. also Arakon he's another tech guru you may wanna have some correspondence with about the supergun construction.

...good choice going MVS you'll find it to be a lot cheaper venture than AES, good luck girl! :)

Thanks for your help evasyar. Do you know where I could track down these test and service buttons? What do they do? How do you install them, is it difficult? Thanks again

...well you'll find that some JAMMA PCB have those Hard DIP switiches that control difficulties, # of lives, etc., that you can set for a game. for example most Neo Geo MVS PCBs have Hard DIP switches, DIP # 1 is TEST, you can flip that on or off, ON if you want the MVS to boot test mode, in there you'll be able to setup some things for neo game like # of lives, difficulty, censorship on or off. but in order to do that you have to still flip the HARD dip on the board itself, the TEST and SERVICE switch is already prewired to your JAMMA harness and this is the ones MAS SuperNova is lacking. this might not necessarily be a big deal unless you encounter a PCB (like Hyper Neo Geo 64 motherboard for example), the Hard DIP doesn't do squat. you end up switching the Cab's (or the supergun if it has service or test switch ON) to set certain properties of your game. you can however set the test and/or service switch yourself installations MODs you have to do yourself. here are some info from that from a guy named briggs link is right here!!!

good luck! i did wish arakon and jhendrix or briggs is here to answer some more of your questions... :)

...i have heard numerous claims that the SIGMA unit have better S-Video/RGB output (ie., not bleeding on screen, no lines on top of the screen) but i haven't seen the SIGMA in action. however the SIGMA has the TEST and SERVICE button already linked to the unit's jamma harness. My MAS SuperNova doesn't even have that even tho i luv using my MAS SuperNova, to this day I have not had installed any TEST or SERVICE buttons which is much needed to change setting for my hyper neo geo PCBs or my golden axe 2 the revenge of death adder PCB where the HARD DIP settings doesn't do squat...

...also there is a guy here named winston goh - he is currently selling supergun units that maybe more relaxed on the price. hey winston where are you?!?? anyway, i forgot the link to his storesite already, i hope he responds to you soon.. peace! :D

Here! check out supergun at

www.geocities.com/nokiaphone79/index.html

Now with new video decoder that output S-Video!

Also, I'll put up new product for the neo!

No more S-video mod, just plug this little gadget to the neo and you get superb S-Video.

Much cheaper than XNEO-1 and much better.

Sigma is the best of the 3 that you mention.

The Super Nova (MAS) has got the best controllers I have ever played with but the unit doesn't come with a test button--kind of a pain.

The HGA is one big pile of hot steamy SHIT! STAY AWAY!!

Haha, ok thanks for the tip Mike, I'll be sure to stay away from the HGA :) . If i've got the old 1 slot MVS system with the joystick ports, would the sigma be the best to go with? What are the best joysticks to get too? Thanks in advance guys.

For mine I used the Happ Ultimate Joysticks(it's the best american style stick, IMHO) and the ultimate pushbuttons you can get from www.happcontrols.com

Best stuff if you asked me, but if you prefer the Japanese sticks (the ones with the ball on top, like the AES joystick), Happ has them too.
And just incase, make sure no matter what stick you get, get the 8 way one. :)

Peace

I picked up a Mas systems unit second hand. The sticks are a dream, great on the PS2 and dreamcast (you can get MAS to do extra connectors).

I've been pretty happy with the video quality of the Mas unit.

good luck with it.

Thanks everyone, you've all been a great help. I have one more question (I hope :p ): Does the Supernova from mas systems come with the JAMMA harness or is that sold separately? I checked their site and didnt see anything stating whether or not it was included with the supernova unless I missed it. Thanks in advance.

The harness is installed into the unit. It's nice. But if you are looking for something a little smaller you can get the following deal from nikkie:

Sigma AV-7000 $249
Sigma AV-9000TB(joystick) $149 x 2
AV9000TB cable(for the second joystick) $35
Jamma harness $45
S-video cable $39
+ EMS(express mail service)

My price for this set with EMS is $690.
