Hi! I have a few question.

I just one the bid on a brand new Euro (Pal) Neo Geo CD system. I have seen video mods around the net. Has anybody tried any?

My second question, can the system run on standard US power?

Thanks,

Video mod... hmm, if you're referring to a conversion from PAL to NTSC (50 to 60Hz), then yes, I have done these mods, they're not too much of a fuzz.

I have written a HOWTO about it, which you will find
<a href="http://home1.gte.net/res002b4/neogeo/cdmods.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.

A Euro NeoCD/power supply needs 220V input voltage, not 110V (US standard), so your Euro power supply won't work out-of-the-box, you will need a converter which steps up 110V to 220/240V.

Thanks for the info.

I have never seen a neo cd in person. Does it have a internal power supply or an external?

Thanks!

It has an external power supply.

For more info about the NeoCD (including some pictures), go

The NeoCD power supply plug (which goes into the console) is a non-standard plug with three pins. AFAIK, there are no universal power supplies available with this kind of plug, nor are there any adaptors.

A normal NeoCD/AES power supply has 10V / 1A, which is not easy to find as standard power adaptors; most of them have 4/6/9/12V, and 0.5A.

The PAL Neo PSU is universal and will work on US power....

BUT and it's a big BUT...

You need to be able to change the plug, from three pin to US two pin. I have no idea how you do this, as I've never seen a US plug that can be changed, so I don't know how you'd wire it up.

If you can buy an adaptor that lets you plug in the three pin, you're OK.

Actually, now I think about it, if this is a new PAL system it will come with a Euro two pin plug which will fit a shaving adaptor (provided US shaving sockets are the same as Europe). All you'd need is the shaving adaptor and you're away.

The only other soloution is to source the US NG CD power unit. Plug it in to the unit and problem solved.

Either way the machine will still only run at 50hz.

Hope this has been some help.

Tama, for clarity's sake, I was referring to the three-pin plug which goes into the console, not the power plug (on the other side of the cord). This nasty three-pin thingy is a non-standard piece of hardware, and very hard to find. The best way to get one is to watch out for a broken NeoCD power supply on ebay, which can be had for $5 or less.

The power plug (which has two pins in most European countries) can be plugged into an universal travelling adaptor for US compatibility.

Sorry if all this does not make much sense, but I find it kinda hard to describe such things in English... hmm, too bad they told us nothing about crystals, plugs, resistors and other such stuff in school! :)

Ok. So the Neo CD has an internal PSU that can run off of US 110/120 60hz and 220/240 50hz. Correct?

If it does have the 2 pin Euro plug I can pick up an adapter at Wal-Mart.

Thanks guys.

@ Takumaji - I was refering to the power plug! ;)

Rscan - you'll need an RGB scart lead to get a colour picture. The TV hook up leads supplied will only display a PAL signal - hence you get black and white. Try an RGB lead.

If this doesn't work you've done something wrong.

Hope this helps. :)

:( I don't have a TV with RGB color input.

I guess I could always find a PAL to NTSC converter.

Or maybe someone would like to trade units.

BTW, all of you have been very helpful! Thanks!

Geez.. what a load of misinformation.

First, you haven't done a TRUE NTSC conversion. Sounds like either you missed a jumper, or didn't sub the components, or you need to change the crystal.

Second, yeah 10V 1A is common as shit. But its gotta be REGULATED. A Genesis unit would do, if you could either find the connector to replace, or put a 2.1mm socket in the machine. Or use an RGB monitor/TV, yeah.

Thirdly, I don't think the PSU is auto-switching. The UK-US adaptor IS available, but you should be looking for a step-down transformer!!

Last, go somewhere like Telegames to get a spare PSU, maybe even some video leads - or does neo-geo.com sell these still?

Does anybody know what crystal needs to be replaced?

I did do the mod correctly. Now what I have is a NTSC 4.43(AKA PAL60) signal from the Composit/SVIDEO outputs.

Is there a cyrstal on the video board thats needs to be replaced?

Thanks,
Randy
