Does anyone know if the rgb cable for an AES only transmits rgb, not composite?
I can't seem to get a good signal using a scart to composite/s-video adaptor. Maybe I need a proper scart converter(rather than adaptor), but I can only see these available for scart rgb to component and maybe composite.
Is it actually possible to use s-video without modding the cart system?

A properly wired scart lead should carry both rgb and a composite signal, although I have seen many cables for various systems that have purported to be rgb and once opening up the scart end they are just wired for composite.

A proper rgb wired scart should have only about 8 wires in it and the most importantly a resistor going from pins 8-16. This autoswitches the av channel into rgb mode.If these pins aren't connected together then you will just have composhite output.

And as for s-vhs, as youi are ina country that has rgb scart connections on the back of your tv's why bother butchering a perfectly good system to mod it for an inferior signal. S-vhs is only good for those countried who don't have rgb capable tv sets like in the us.

The RGB signals inside the SCART plug are output from pin 11, 13 and 15.

Converting from RGB (one form of video) to another (S-Video), is never going to be as good as say, S-Video which is tapped internally.. of course your converter might not be of that good quality.

From what I gathered, quite large areas of Australia don't use televisions with RGB SCART, I think whilst the whole country is PAL, only certain areas use the SCART connector.. of course joe8 will be the one that knows about this better than I! :)

TVs with scart inputs are actually quite rare in Australia- probably only large tvs made around the turn of the century, or certain brands (like maybe teac).
For a long time the best inputs you could get in Australia were RF and RCA(composite). But some new crts being sold have s-video and component inputs, but not scart. LCDs usually don't have scart, and the ones that do, i don't think it would accept RGB. Probably only accept component.
Scart is sometimes used for set top boxes and vcrs here, but it probably carries component/composite rather than the old rgb.
I think component is a modern version of the rgb used in arcade monitors. I think it uses digital processesing to decrease the bandwidth required.

I'm a little surprised that Australia doesn't have a prevalence of D-terminal connectors.
