Okay, so I just modded my Neo using the Neo Store bios, piggybacking it like in the directions, but now it doesn't work! All I get when I turn on the system is flicking noise and a garbled picture with random characters and numbers! What in the hell did I do wrong?

help

sounds like just any bios error.. most likely a pin doesn't have good contact. also make sure you didn't turn the bios chip the wrong way.

Yet another piggyback drama oh_no

Most of the time people screw some track(s) of the PCB while cutting pin 2.

Piggyback is evil, don't use it.

Okay, so if I don't use piggyback, can I just take out the old bios and put the new one in its place? Will that work just the same?

actually chances to totally ruin the neogeo when removing the original bios are a lot higher than damaging anything with the piggyback method. unless you are very good at desoldering through-hole chips and have good equipment for it, you WILL damage traces and vias.

Just go through and trace each lead ( all 40 of them) on both bioses. Also make sure the keys line up (the key is the 1/2 circle of material missing one one end of the bios). I used a volt/ohm meter to see if there was good contact between them when i did my system. I doubt you killed it. Just slow down and try again.

What's worse? Piggybacking or someone trying to remove the BIOS with a pair of plyers and a hair dryer? The lesser of the two evils is definately the piggyback method.

Of course, the optimal solution is to remove the original and put in a socket (or even a ZIF socket), but the majority of people don't have the tools to do it properly or don't want to pay the extra cost to have it done that way.

Before you go digging around and breaking more stuff, if you want someone to look at it, I can do it. I don't charge for assessing a problem as long as you cover the return shipping. If it's a pretty quick fix, I usually don't charge for the time.

You can drop me a line at : jmkurtz@columbus.rr.com to discuss this further if you want.

what are my options, then?

Piggybacking was commonly done decades ago, as a method of addressing multiple ROMS without using much PCB space.

Not saying its the correct solution but it is an easy solution.

I'm in the electronics field but I chose to piggyback it for now to see if it works ok. I may keep it piggybacked now, as I think I want to switch between ROMS whenever I want to.

Changing bios seems difficult from the beginning. Less drama with this as *most* people will avoid doing the mod / or have a tech friend do it for them.

You don't need so much hardware to swap bioses.

There's been a lot of fried neo systems lately with piggyback. oh_no

the bios mod was as easy as the xbox 9 wire mod. i got it done in 5 min. but if your getting crappy display, its cause you didnt solder a pin correctly. i mostly do ps2 mods and the neo by far is cake. if i were to ever do neo's i would only charge 20 for installing the chip just like i charge 20 for xbox's
