X-Neo, does it work well?

I may possibly do a trade with someone for a X-Neo and I wanted to know if it would eliminate all the rainbows that I have been getting on Hanzo's sleeves, Galfords sleeves, etc. while using the standard composite hookups. Also, will it make the picture sharper at all? Thanks in advance.

Edit: What will give you better quality, X-Neo or a S-Vid mod?

I have serial #14xxx neo, with both xneo and s-vid mod... xneo has a better picture than the s-vid mod- no more dot crawl, more vivid colors, only minimal color bleeding, but the rainbow effect is still around, i think the only way to get rid of it is to go straight RGB.

XNeo is def better, but it costs a lot more than a mod and is tough to find.

So I will still have the rainbows on Hanzo and Galfords sleeves? I thought that S-video eliminated that. It looks like the deal went through and the X-Neo is mine, so I will just have to wait and see once it gets to my place. I really hope the rainbows are slightly less visable with the S-video since that is the main reason I wanted it.

The X-Neo is not a mod, it is a adapter that allows you to run S-video to your Neo-Geo without modding. Here is a picture of a X-Neo, courtesy of Neo Bomberman:

The X-Neo is a video encoder that takes the rgb out from the neo and encodes it into composite and s-vid out. Anyone know what chip is in the x-neo? Lawrence?

How much did you pay for that?

Hmm... so the DIN jack on the Neo has pins for RGB? That makes sense, but I never thought about it.

I have a X-Neo, it actually adds 'dithering'
to the picture. I almost never use it, I prefer
the normal composite. Oh and I never liked the
idea of modding a system, so I couldn't really
tell you.

I paid over $100. That's what they usually go
for anyway.

I agree with you, Jorge. I also prefer the standard composite over the system mods. I own a dedicated MVS cab, and I prefer the composite on my AES over the RBG in my cab. When it comes down to it, I believe that smoother edges look better than obvious pixels.

The thing is, I'm really not using the S-vid because I want to have a sharper image, I am using it because I want to eliminate the annoying rainbows. I guess I'll have to just wait and see how it works out for me.

Edit: By the way, Neo-Geo games look alot better if you set the VM to low on your TV. Usually it is set on high by default.

I've got an XNEO-1, and you will notice a substantial improvement over the Neo's normal composite picture. Using my Japanese Neo (serial number is around 15XXXX, I believe), I noticed that the rainbow effects all but disappeared. I'm pretty picky about that stuff, so it was worth it to me to fork over the 100 bucks.

But personally, I prefer the S-video mod (mine was done by KPJ) over the standard composite and the XNEO-1's S-video, but that's probably a matter of taste. I LIKE to see the sharp edges and the crisp pixels, whereas some prefer a smoother look (which I can understand). So that's sort of what the XNEO-1 gives you - you get the smooth edges of the normal composite, but without the normal color bleeding and distortion. Hope this helps.

Awsome, that is the kind of picture that I am looking for. My AES is serial number 40,XXX but I am sure that the X-Neo will still provide me with the same output that you got with your higher serial number AES.

Edit: One more question, I need to buy a standard s-video cable to go from the X-Neo to the TV correct? What is the best brand to get, or will it even make a difference?

It may make a slight difference, but so small that it probably won't be noticable. I paid $60 for a 6' Monster Video 3 cable and it was the biggest waste of money ever. I didn't notice any difference from my $9.99 gold-plated RCA brand cable, and I'm quite picky.

If you have a lot of large motors, generators, transformers and the like in your game room Monster Video may be a wise purchase. loco I still think $50 - $60 is just ridiculous for a cable.

The cable quality issue is blown way out of proportion IMO.

On cable quality, I wouldn't pay for a Monster Cable. I wouldn't use the cheap cables that come with DVD players and other items either, as Riot said above you can get a good gold plated cable for around 10 bucks.

Seeing composite after looking at the Neo out of S-Video makes me sick. I've never had the pleasure of seeing a neo done on good RGB though, the arcade games around here have very crappy monitors, I'd take my TV over them any day.

The XNEO-1 has the same chip in it as the Neo has - the CXA1145.

I think you should stress that "in my cab" (evidently with a crappy monitor) unless you wanna be laughed at for the rest of your days...
