I decided to pop SamSho 1 into my neo last week (It had been months) and I've been playing it every night for days now.

I am always amazed at how good this game is, but even more amazed at how good this game was for it's time. Damn! I remember when I first layed eyes on it. Up until then, I had always considered the MVS to be weak when it came to fighting games. Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were the masters of the arcade back then. Fatal Fury 1? Art of Fighting 1? Good games, fun and all, but weak when compared to SFII.

The game is trememdous from just about every point of view. Graphically it is wholly unmatched for it's day. Compared to the Neo games that came before it- it's really an amazing leap forward.

The gameplay, while not stellar by todays standards, was terrific. (SamSho 2 made this game feel a little clunky)

The characters were (are) just about the best and most original cast in any single fighting game debut ever. Even gameplay wise, with the exception of Haohmaru (who's a bit of a Ryu/Ken ripoff gameplay wise- sorry SNK) the characters were all exceedingly original.

Not just one of the best SNK games ever, not one of the best fighting games ever, one of the best video games of all time. Original, beautiful and classic.

This is the game that made people go out and lay down the $500+ for the Neo. This is the game that made Capcom #2.

A real piece of art. All class. Amazing.

Uh, I think my point was that SamSho 1 made Capcom #2 (in terms of being the 'best' fighter in the arcades) at the time it came out. When SamSho 1 was released it was the first game to look better and feel 'cooler' than Capcom's flagship fighter.

Of course by todays standards it plays a bit clunky, but back in the early 90's it was gold.

Anyone who thought any Pre-Alpha Street Fighter game was cooler than SamSho 1 had all the aesthetic sense of Flava Flav from fucking Public Enemy for Christsakes.

Did I mean SamSho 1 made all Capcom games #2 from 1993 onward? Of course not.

Duh!

Now although these screens don't do the game full justice, they still look terrific. Just imagine how good they were in 1993...

I agree with ya Neo Buyer. I guess we have a lot of children on the board who didn't grow up at the right time to truly understand the neo geo from the arcade standpoint. You can put hte game in an arcade but you won't get the competition anymore - not the same kind from 1993. Unless we have a nuclear holocaust and a clan of survivors in America with nothing better to do, and no history of gaming, find a working dedicated MVS with Sam Sho 1, the magic will never be reclaimed.

damn I feel old

I always remember the people who could pull off mad stuff in ss1, is it correct hanzo can turn invisible?

I just sold my US copy a few weeks back in hope of getting the JPN counterpart.. haven't picked it up yet.. been too busy with SS2 :D

I give praise where praise is due. I loved that game. It was the second SNK game I played. The first been Fatal Fury. I owned the Genesis game and played it all the time. It's the reason I'm going to go ahead and get a Cab. I played it about a week ago in Putt-Putt and it made me not give up hope. But I never thought it was better than Super Street Fighter II. I can't tell you how many hours I have played that game and it's many incarnations. So don't get me wrong Samurai Showdown is good, damn good, but better than Sreet Fighter II? As they say in the ATL "hell-to-the-naw." Of course not many will agree with me but that's understood.

I've gotta say its true..... you mention the classics games to the young un's and they just laugh.

Remember Scrabble, Defender, Metal Slug.... they have difficulty getting back beyond Coolboarders!!

Had my revenge the other day though...... had my lad playing Metal Slug 3 (not so far back but still 2D!).... and he just can't get enough of it.... well, except the odd break to play Samurai Shodown!!! :D

Even the sound in SamSho 1 was revolutionary (Especially for a home system).

I remember after finally getting an AES system, I heard the ambient sounds of Gen-An's level... I was floored.

Brilliance!

I feel this whole vibe too fellas. I was a big fan of the Neo already, in love with the likes of Fatal Fury Special, BBS2 and Viewpoint, but SamSho was the first game I bought right upon release. Die Hard Game Club got in precious few copies, and I ended up paying $285 plus shipping.

I was truly pissed when I saw the white blood at home, but proceeded to play it anyway (and also prayed daily for a blood code.)

The first time I laid eyes on it over at Golf N Stuff here in Tucson was truly magical though. This bitchin' weapons fighter, oozing with power, style, and in 1993, a world-class soundtrack. I dropped $10 in tokens on it that night and proceeded to go back day after day for about six weeks straight.

Before that, I thought nothing would top the excitement experienced the night they got SF2:Champion Edition. Hot damn was I wrong.

I too will have to agree. SS was my favorite game at the arcades at that time. Beutiful graphics along with much color. It was the first game that I bought for my Neo console.

You're preaching to the choir on this one :) . It's my favorite series of all time, and the sequel is my fav fighting game of all time. Playing SS1 made me get a Neo because I wanted to own the sequel so badly. I finally acquired a copy of the legendary SS1 a few months ago :) . This series is fantastic, and I think the graphics of SS1 still hold up quite well despite the game's age.

Well, Samurai Shodown 1 is good but Samurai Shodown 2 is glourious! I bought a Neo Geo back in 1994 because of SS2.

I think SS2 has the most impressive Endmaster of all times! Mizuki with her Werewolf is just awesome and her stage just killed me back then...

I love Samsho. It was the first game I ever played for the Neo. And I mean back in the early 90's on a cab in a little pool hall near my house.

No doubt that Samurai Shodown 2 is ONE of the best fighting game in early 90's and even by today standard.

But I'll not say SS2 puts Capcom in #2 position.

Don't forget that team behind Street Fighter II went to work for SNK...

Of course SS2 is better than Street fighter Alpha or later series.

But who can defeat the almighty Street Fighter II Turbo?

No one can......

Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Blanka, Bison, Vega....

Those well-known names are still floating around video game world.....

How many people can remember the character names from SS series besides Neo gamer?

Charm Charm? Who the hell is that?
Haohmaru? Japanese?

Think about it......

Capcom is the pioneer of 2D platform & fighting games (Ghouls & Ghosts, Final Fight, Street Fighter II.....etc)

In the end, I'll say I love both Capcom and SNK
Both companies have brought us many awesome and wonderful games to us.....

I remember playing Samurai Shodown for the very first time back on December 12th, 1993. I was celebrating my 13th birthday party at a local arcade/pizza parlor called Shakey's. When I went inside of the arcade, I saw a rare sight. Not only were Super Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat 2 there, but so was a new game called Samurai Shodown. At the time, it was rare to see the "Big Three" at a local arcade, so I seized the opportunity and played all three. Needless to say, I got the most pleasure out of playing Samurai Shodown (and getting my butt kicked in it). Back then, I thought that Mortal Kombat (and MKII) were the only fighting games to have fatalities, but after seeing Charlotte getting stabbed to death (and Nakoruru getting sliced in half), I was proven wrong. After playing it, I went over to win a bunch of tickets playing other games. I ended up winning a stuffed wolf (which I named Poppy, after Galford's dog). It was truly an awesome experience (it was also a birthday party I wouldn't be forgetting anytime soon).

I got to play it a few more times at a local bowling alley (up until about 1997), and it still looked good back then. Late last year, I got a Samurai Shodown MVS kit, and every once in a while, I'll pop in the cart, just to relive those memories I had from that day back in December 1993.

I'll pay my respects for SamSho 1 & 2. I have both cartridges and I haven't played those games for awhile since I have already beaten SamSho 1 in hard mode with 1 credit and SamSho 2 level 8 also with 1 credit.
I guess I'll start to play SamSho 1 again in hard mode to see if I still can do it with 1 credit. :D

Not back then you didn't. I agree 100%, Samurai Shodown was THE BEST fighter out at the time. Yeah, it's gotten better since then (from Capcom, and all others), but at the time, SamSho was a badass game. Hell, it's still really good to this day. Yeah, the Neo's got much better now, but tribute is deserved.

GEEZ, 1 Credit?? I'd be lucky to beat either with 20 credits on level 2.
Anyway, SS2 was the main reason that I got into the neo although I really liked SS1. It was the colors, all the beautiful colors of Nak's stage that did it. The blue of the river/lake, the brown bears, the green forest, the pure white of Nak's robe! I still remember me and a friend going to the local walmart on our way to and from karate playing some SS1. Some of the stares we got while playing in our karate gi's were hilarious! Still it was pretty cool. Can't wait to get that box set insert for my SS's. Then I can proudly display them for all the see.

Here's to SamSho 1! I still remember the first ass kicking I got at the hands of Earthquake! Back in the day that game kicked so much ass, infact it still does! My AES and SamSho1 cart should be here soon, and when it does it's gonna be full on SamSho madness! Hey, wait, my buddy has SamSho 1 in his MVS cab, I've gotta go....... :D

The best Samurai Shodown game ever. Firstly, it started it all, and it haves the best soundtrack of all the other SAMSHO's. It's my 2nd Favorite Neo Geo game ( 1st place king is... Fatal Fury Special ), and in my personal top 10 ranking it goes on the 7th place. Don't ask, TOP 10 #1 is Fatal Fury Special.

I hate it when peoople try to tell you what you think. I didn't like it more than Street Fighter II Turbo. I liked it better than MKII however.
