Tough one! I'm glad I got both already...

I'm a big MOTW fan, but KOF'98 is in a league of its own as far as replay value.

MOTW has a very beautiful look, (almost on par with the LB series) very tight and somewhat unique gameplay, average sound, and is a throwback style fighter with a limited cast (14 characters I think).

'98 has a decent look, huge lineup of people, (38 or something) good sound, and tight, but IMO kinda common gameplay. (I take a point away for DM execution which can be stiff).

If you were an AES collector like me, I'd say go for '98 'cause it's much cheaper...but since your sig indicates you're a MVS guy, you may want to think differently since price isn't that much of a factor I assume.

MotW has the better look . art works , graphics/animations , backgrounds , great intro"s" ........ etc.

but here is a list for it's disadventages (when compared to 98) :

- it's high price
- very simple gameplay (it doesn't have anything special)
- small character cast

I think it had some neat features in the gameplay department with the Top Attacks, (excellent for combination chains, but had to be taken advantage of sparingly diminishing the repetition factor) the benefits for the JUST DEFENDED awards, (enabling health recovery and other benefactors) and the breakers and feints which add a bit to the psychology.

When you say "simple gameplay" you must mean the ease of the DM's...that's the only thing I can gather from your meaning... Them being more fluid than the motions of '98, and somewhat generic result in much easier chaining/linking DM/SDM combinations. Personally, I see that as a plus, not a negative.

So in that regard: Yes, the gameplay would be "simple", but there's much more to it than that IMO as I stated above.

Either way, you can't go wrong with either game.

I meant the combo system (compared to KOF 98) and how slow the game is . they steal the fun

Well opinions vary, but I'll say this...

I've done plenty of combo exploration with Garou, and am quite satisfied with what it offers, as I haven't really found any flaws with its combo system. It having a limited cast will of course make it fall short to any KOF game's combo system '96 and beyond.

The speed issue? Never a problem for me. Haven't really found any notable problems with the game's overall speed. Plays normal as far as I'm concerned.

As an owner of both games topic starter, I can honestly say that I've many times finished playing '98 to play MOTW and vice versa - I've never seen a drastic change in the pace of gaming speed between the two carts. While people in '98 may tend to back-peddle slightly quicker, (and I mean very slightly) MOTW is by no means a early SF2 game. It's very minor, nothing to worry about.

But after further thought; '98 is considered to be the grail of the NG fighters, I say go for it before MOTW.

Both are good games however.

agree . I didn't mean to say that he should avoid MotW because it's a bad game . I just gave him facts so that he can decide which game to choose

I think KOF '98 is vastly over-rated. MOTW is good stuff. While I am not a graphics whore, I do want my games to look impressive. I don't use every character in a game anyway, so I'd rather have a solid roster with fewer characters (like with MOTW), than a behemoth selection with plenty of crap (KOF 98's Chang and Choi, etc.).

get kof '98

vastly better game and easily more affordable

motw is just eye candy - not a great game imo

if you have the money for motw - get breakers instead - looks just as good and plays even better ;)

Agreed.

MoTW is easily the most overrated game on the Neo. Other than graphical eye candy, it has nothing to offer ,IMO, that is any better than what can be found on other fighters on the system.

As a HUGE Fatal Fury fan, I was extremely disappointed by how poor a game Garou was. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

Is that what you really care about? Which looks better? They are both very good, but KOF98, IMHO, is one of the best fighting games ever made.

I'm not sure what it is you really want, however.

I'm not a big fan of either games. If you want eye-candy (superb graphics), a decent amount of characters to choose from and fairly original gameplay choose MotW. Don't pick it up if you're a Fatal Fury fan.

If you like to choose from a shitload of characters and like to string combos without too much difficulty then choose KoF 98. The graphics in this game are too poor to impress but if you're a KoF fan it's not worth complaining about, the gameplay's all there.

Actually I don't think MOTW have a very impressive visuals. The colors are too washed and they look DEAD.

I can't remember a stage with really great rich colors in MOTW. The Best looking stages are the train stage and Butt Stage. Both have poor palette use, while in KOF98 you have at least great vivid stages like the boat one and the USA team, Takuma team.

What's really impressive in MOTW is the superb animations of the characters.

Bottom line :

MOTW is boring in less than an hour
KOF98 is neverending playable ( if you play against a buddy )
;)

Garou:Mark of the Wolves is the best 2D-Fighter imo!!!

Best game for less money is "King of Fighter´s 98" definately!

Most underrated Game on Neo is "Art of Fighting 3" for sure!!!

Both.

No, seriously. Both. Between the two of them, you won't need another 2D fighter for a long, long time (and you won't find much better, either).

KOF 98 is best when you have someone to play with. If you do, then you will never get sick of it.

KoF'98 is the best Neo fighter. Period. MOTW is a lot of fun, very beautiful, and an evolved sequel with about six more good characters could have challenged for the title. But as is, between those two games, KoF'98 is a more polished game with greater replay value thanks to the larger roster and super tight gameplay.

It's like comparing Third Strike to Super Turbo or Alpha 2. Third Strike has much fancier gfx and more convoluted 'systems' (parrying, ex-specials, etc.) but the more polished gameplay and better rosters of the other two games make them better fighters. I don't know about you guys, but I need a lot of solid characters in a fighter to keep playing over months at a time. There's the not-enough extreme (SF3, Garou) and there's the tons-of-crap extreme (MvC2, Alpha 3.)
The best fighters like Super Turbo and KoF'98 have large rosters where at least a sizeable portion are good enough to win consistently with.
Is it any coincidence that '98 and ST are both the fifth iteration of their respective series?
Nope. The best fighters are usually the result of a lot of trial and error.
