Yaton RGB convertor: Any good?

My first post here, how daunting!

So a while back I got a MV-1F motherboard with the intent to either consolize it or rig up my own supergun. However, I'm on an extreme budget (strange hobby to have monetary concerns, no?) and can't quite rationalize spending the $75 or whatever it is on a JROK RGB encoder. My soldering skills are quite rudimentary, so building my own is also out of the question.
I recently stumbled across an RGB encoder sold by the infamous Yaton on eBay. The price is more than right--under $40 with shipping. I'm almost wondering if it's one of those too-good-to-be-true moments. Has anyone else purchased one? Does it work well, or would I be better off forking out for the NeoBitz-S (I have no television with RGB input, so composite and S-Video is all I need)?

I did a brief search of the forums to see if anyone else had asked about this part, but all I found was someone having problems getting theirs to work right in an Astro City cab--hardly reassuring.

Welcome to the forum GSL

Do you have a link to the sale or a spec sheet on the encoder.

I also would like to know too so I could save a few buck on my supergun project.

Anyone ever use one of these?

They work fine on about anything including MVS. The s-video is great. The only catch on these is you have to use +12 volt, not +5,and they need a sync cleaner for Fighters History and Power Instinct 2. It may need one for a few others also, not sure. It does not however need the sync cleaner for Primal Rage,MK,or Time Killers oddly enough.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone!

And thanks for the info on the encoder as well. I bought one of the SC200 power supplies that D-Lite was selling a while back; I ought to just be able to pull the 12+ off the fifth pin for that, right? My understanding is that the MVS uses +5 only, is that correct?

That looks A LOT like the old, old-ass RGB to NTSC converter I had on my original ghetto consolized MVS from before the word "consolized" existed. Maybe the encoder was Chinese after all.

LOL,oh my god thats a massive pile of crap, its all piled on a ugly old plank of wood.

Seriously, these encoders are fine. Depending on what you do,you may want to add a jrok sync cleaner with them. I have no idea about the power supply thing, you may want to ask the guy who sold it to you, sorry :(

You need to understand that this thing was amazing back in the 90's. The idea of using an MVS on a TV without a supergun was a very novel idea at the time, and many people would have paid dearly to have it. I was very proud to own it. Also, the cover isn't on it in the picture. Of course now NTSC encoders are readily available, and everyone knows about arcade power supplies and jamma harnesses, but back then it was a wonderful setup. To disparage it is to disparage the history of arcade games at home.

WOW.
Looks like the one slot CMVS I built in the early 90's.
I'll have to get A pic of it up some day.
Awesomeness.

ETA;
I wonder how well that "PC Arcade Controller 2 Player Version(With USB/PS2 ADAPTER) For MAME Cabinet" works.

That's more than likely how mine will end up looking, actually, despite my intentions otherwise! But hey, considering when it was made, it was quite the achievement. I actually sort of like the whole open boards and wires look, as it gives it an air of technological mystery. "What the hell is that?" your friends ask. "Metal Slug, see?" If my living quarters weren't so impossibly dusty, I'd just call it good with a setup like that.

I've noticed a lot of the CMVS systems people have here and on the Supergun Repository (before it vanished into the Internets) have nifty metal or plexiglass shields to protect the delicate PCB bits. Is there a specific place to find these things online, or is it the sort of thing one can get at a local hardware store or something (I'm thinking more along the lines of the plexiglass, not the metal)? Or is it stuff people just do in their garages and I'm SOL because I have no power tools?

The MVS should come with its own cover. You should always use the cover. I never used that MVS above with the cover off. It was just removed in the picture to try to explain what it is and what it does to potential buyers back when I bought it on a newsgroup.

Oh no, I'm not talking about taking the exisiting cover off. It's just that since mine is a MV-1F, there's a fair amount of PCB showing in front of the plastic cover around the cart slot. I tried to find a picture of a similar mod on the boards, but they're proving scarce with SGR down. Basically, what I've seen and what I'd like to do is a piece of plexiglass or acrylic on riser screws to keep stuff from falling onto the bare board or whatnot. I hope that description makes sense, I'll keep looking for a picture.

Grab a 2 slot mobo and it'll come with a metal cover. You can then take it off and paint it and drill holes in it if needed. Take a look at my signature.

Yeah, I really like the paint job on yours! I would look into a 2-slot as they seem to be one of the more common MVS boards to rig up for home use outside a cab. Unfortunately, I've already got the MV-1F. What's frustrating is I've seen pictures of what I want to do, I just can't find them anymore! :oh_no:

Something to note is that not all 2-slots come with metal covers. Make sure you're getting one when you order. I've only ever seen the smaller revision 2-slot with a metal cover.
