Trouble with Naomi/JAMMA controls

Hi. I will try not to make this too long winded but please bear with me ;)

I recently bought a Naomi Universal cabinet with Naomi hardware inside and everything was fine with it. When I connect my JVS/JAMMA interface...

...and hook up my MVS 1 slot OR a JPAC into my PC, the button 1's for both players act kind of erratically. They register about 6 out of 10 presses depending on how fast I hit the buttons. If I hold another button or joystick direction whilst doing this, they behave perfectly, 100% of the time....except when I hold the down direction on either stick. Weird huh? I was sure that the JVS/JAMMA interface was faulty so I got a new one only to find that the problem was still there on the same buttons. As I said before, running test mode in NAOMI or in a NAOMI game, the controls are absolutely fine.

It seems to get better and worse all by itself too. Last night I disconnected the coin mechanism and both buttons worked perfectly for about 10 hours then it was back to the old problem again.

Has anyone here seen anything like this before? Is it possibly a ground problem somewhere or a problem with the Sega i/o? (if this was the case why would it work fine with NAOMI?) Surely it is not likely that I have managed to get 2 identically faulty JVS/JAMMA interfaces?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for that Bill. I had a suspicion that might be the case. Being pretty much an electronics noob, what would be the best way to start troubleshooting it?

Directly ground everything that should be grounded...

Don't ground one device through another
