I've been really wanting to get some japanese cabinets for some time now and I think I'm going to get some this summer. I wanted to get 2 maybe 3. I was mainly looking at the astro city cabinets. But I've been reading that some games won't display correctly or good since it's a low res monitor.

I just wanted to throw in games like tekken tag, marvel vs capcom 2, third strike, possibly tekken 6 X_X or maybe connect a ps3 to it.

Which cabinets would be good for these games? I started looking at the new astro. Would I be ok with these?

Any help is appreciated.

From what i hear, astros are the way to go, unless you are fortunate enough to come across a megalo. I hear Sega's Blast city cabs also look nice with a very bright & sharp monitor.

you shouldn't have to worry too much about scan rates. almost every board will run at 15 khz, some of the newer hardware like atomiswave allow you to go 31 khz in VGA mode via 15 pin adaper (like the ones hooked up to your computer monitor)
but the majority of jamma boards & neo-geo, CPS1 & 2 all work at 15 khz.

Can you hook a PS3 into these cabs...? i'm not sure you'd want to because of the low scan rate, i think your ps3 would be better suited to an hdtv imho.

is the blast city pretty much the same type of setup as astro city? And when you say astro are you just referring to regular astros?

yea, most blast city / astro / impress cabs have the same control panel shape & I believe are interchangeable. Blast city cabs are not common in america, however i heard that Sega released the title "Get Bass" in their blast city cab & brought them over here, however the control panel is rigged for a fishing game, I think there is also a popular baseball game that also uses a special control panel that they brought to america aswell, thankfully you can easily switch them over as soon as you find another control panel.

Your in ca so your best bet would probably take a trip down to Matsu's place & see what he has in stock.

I don't know if all Chuck E Cheese are the same, but if you have one in your area, check if they have a Blast City Cab. We have a new one in the San Jose (Cupertino) area and they have a Sega Bass Fishing Blast City Cab. Good way to start to get an idea of cab and panel size.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sort of familiar with the sizes because I've played on a few at various places. Family Fun down in Granada Hills has a bunch of them. I was just wondering about the game compatibilities. Can any game and hardware be set up to work on any cabinet pretty much?

I wish I could just take a trip to Matsu's but I live in norcal and that's about a good 5-6 hour drive.

allmost all boards are Jamma, you shouldn't have any problems hooking these babies up to almost any cab.

old games like Sega's System 16, Nintendo's playchoice 10, asteroids, pacman, original street fighter boards & golden axe etc. are not wired for Jamma, but if your into any post 1990 arcade board it's almost always jamma, with maybe an extra harness for buttons.

This is a great website for reading up on various types of hardware & what games were released on the system. http://www.system16.com/

they also have a great little pinout section Here witch will give you an idea of what you'll run into when you have all the parts in front of you.

I suggest you get a cab with the harness already wired, that way you can look inside and really get a feel to where witch wires are going to witch parts. after a few days of headscratching, it clicks & it's actually quite easy when you get the hang of it, just remember your grade 8 science on conductivity :)
