Component video: worth it?

So I'm thinking about upgrading my American AES console (want blood!) The Unibios 2.3 consoles with all those video outputs are mighty sexy, but what's the real difference? Has anyone out there noticed a significant difference in composite/component/S-video that justifies the tech?:spock:

i am COMPLETELY content with S-video personally. Its eye-blisteringly clear. It looks better than my cabs and way better than composite. Only reason for component is an HDTV...in which case I don't want to see my Neo THAT clear and sans the scanlines. Kinda' ruins it for me. What kind of TV are you playing on?

For maximum compatibility and an almost perfect picture S-video is great and cheaper. You can get S-video output from an AES for $10-60.

On a new non-HD big screen TV with component in, I can't tell the difference between component and S-video for classic games. The S-video connection already has separate pins for chroma a luminescence, so splitting it out the way NTSC component does doesn't really give you any added benefit. I think component is really only useful for progressive scan and high definition.

Just don't settle for composite, it's like night and day.

Playing with component on my HDTV reminds me of playing the games on my PC with teh ROMz. The "bleed over" in the text is non-existent and picture is about as crisp and clear as it can possibly get.

Pixelation is more pronounced too. That can be good or bad depending on your tastes.

I say get both S-vid and component... and go with the one you like the best.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I'm actually using a 42" Toshiba rear-projection HDTV. It sounds like I could get by with the S-Video (making out the pixelation isn't a high priority for me.) I might be looking at more than 10-60 bucks, though, as I want to put in Unibios and do the whole stereo sound thing, too.
I'm intrigued by doing the mod myself instead of buying a new Unibios-equipped AES on Ebay, but I have no experience with electronics. Using some of the very detailed guides I've seen on the net, how hard would you say is the mod process?

I think the hardest part of the modding for a beginner is more the drilling and mounting of the jacks.

Good thing your not using an LCD type HDTV or it would look like crap with all video connections. Honestly with a projection TV you might want to use component. Component does have more vibrant color, brightness and sharpness. Also, you get less pixily dots that is noticable to me on S-video.

*Be careful with not burning out the TV, the Neo Geo uses a lot of signal cutting on and off for flashing effects. It could burn out the rear projection. You may want to get a secondary Standard TV that has component and S-video and play it in another room or something. Try a nice Sony Trinitron/WEGA 24" and up.*

Sounds like good advice to me.

You can get a beautiful S-Video picture from Neo Geo, and there's barely any difference between that, and component honestly. I've seen the difference in person, and 300wins still has an excellent thread on the subject. (screenshots possibly being updated in the future too ;))

Oh, and as a general rule: Old school games look like shit on HD setups.

Seconded. I've seen that on my SNES, as well. Still, the living room is my current gaming hub and that's the current situation. Looking at those comparison pics, the component video does look pretty snazzy. In a couple weeks, I'll see whatI feel like splurging on.

The 300wins post uses the Neobitz S-video. I've done a direct comparison of the two, and I think the S-video on the Jrok is slightly better, and am willing to pay for the difference.

I don't always buy into Expenive cables or crap like that...

But I will say this:

Component is better than all forms of S-Video when it comes to Neo Geo....

Actually, no... I didn't use the Neobitz-s encoder. I used one of the first ones from Jeff that had component on it. The Neobitz-s encoder doesn't have component. And I do believe the thread ask, "is component worth it?" It's not asking if s-video is worth it.

I was under the impression that 480i/240p component was just as good as pure RGB since it was basically just that?

That's what I meant. I wonder if there is a difference between the S-video on the Neobitz component and the Neobitz-S.

I mention this because I think the S-video is better on the Jrok, and if you're going to proclaim the component better than the S-video based on that test, it's worth considering the Jrok one too.

On the Neobitz the S-video and Component are pretty close but you can see with the component video better detail.

No, I meant the S-video on the two versions of the Neobitz, not comparing the S-video to the component.

The comparison of the Neobitz vs. the Jrok is worth doing too. I think I've read before on this forum that the Jrok is a little better for S-video and the Neobitz is better for component. I can't testify. I trust the Jrok a little more overall, but they're both good.

They're both the same as the both use the same chip.

Component has half the color bandwidth of pure RGB.

That's what I figured. From my direct comparison, the Jrok S-video is better.

This is a little OT but where was that document that showed which jamma boards the 2 were compatible with for superguns?

I am unaware of such a document. That would be nice if someone made one.
