Will a Cap kit fix my arcade monitor??

Hey guys,

The cab i recently bought has an old Zenith 25" monitor.. Its from Wells Gardner..

The model number off the chassis is 25K7191.

The prob with the picture is that its overall dull.. The colors are all there its just not very bright. The whites looks yellow/redish. I can see a few jail bars and some jiddering or flickering at times.. Other then that it looks good. I cant see any burn in. Though it just might not be bright enough yet to see it hehe.

I've tried messing with the contrast and black level pots and its either over bright or dull.

It very well may fix everything. If nothing else it's a great place to start. Once you've replaced the caps, you can eliminate that and narrow it down further. It's a cheap fix and you're bound to see at least some improvement.

Someone else suggested that my monitor be rejuvinated? Anyone close to Macomb MI have one?

You need to do the cap kit & resolder any cracked solder joints before you even think about rejuvenating the CRT.

Many dull color problems can be resolved by refreshing the caps. The ones that can't are good candidates for rejuvenation.

You don't want to stress the CRT with the rejuvenation process unless you really need it.

Ok then.. Thanks for the info. I guess i'll try the cap kit sinec its so cheap first and see whats next.. I'd just hate to waste money and time trying to fix something if it cant be fixed and toss it in the trash.

I was going to buy a new monitor for the mame setup anyways but ofcourse $500 is out of the question right now after shipping.

You should have expected this going in on a second hand cab. There is a reason they are selling it. Either it's not making any more money for the operator or (more often) you are buying someone else's problems. Just like a used car.

Well at the time i really didnt care about the monitor and the guy said it was good.. Infact everything the guy said i bought it from was a flat out lie.

New paint job was the only thing that was true as he needed to do that to make it look half decent.

That fucker said all new locks! NOT a luck on the cab anywhere!
Brand new back light works 100%.. Might be newer to the cab but she's gota blown blab you can see a half mile away.

Fully cleaned inaide and out.. Again. What?? The damn thing had stuff inside i could'nt even describe if i had to.. Plus the control panel recently had a pop spill and the fucker didnt even bother even trying to clean it up. All the bottons are sticky as well from that and the pop went under the plexy so its all nice looking!

Said the coin door and cash door worked and had mechs worked 100%.. What?? Theres no mechs period. Plus only one of the coin slot lights work.

The cab was dropped once on the front right side as the front panel broke away from the side and they tried repairing it and it didnt work as its kicked in. The control panel is also higher on that side since it was dropped.

The coin doors looks like someone tried to break in once as theres cracked wood and holes all around the cash door. Looks like they did get in as they tried there best to reattach the door.. still could'nt tell you how its held on.

The guy buys and sell games for a hobby as he says.. He's got a bunch in his garage.

The whole reason that fucker didnt want to respond to me originally was i believe because he didnt want me to come and pick it up.. He wanted to ship it somewhere so all that damage would look like it was from the shipper... Plus he didnt want me to pay cash as i would haggle when i got there cause it didnt look to good.

I originally only wanted just the cab and didnt care about the monitor as i already planned on replacing it with a 27" Benson multi sync for MAME. Also replace the control panel with a slik stik which are on sale atm.

The monitor from my neo geo 4 slot was like new and that was used as well.

No.. like i said before, he gave me the cold shoulder treatment after the acution and in a panic since i had 2 days to get ahold of him after the end of the auction, i paid it through paypal.. That way he could'nt use his little loop hole to get out of selling it to me since it went for cheap at $212.00. He still didnt even get ahold of me or resond to my email for another couple of days when a guy on here messaged him about the cab if it sold.

The guy said he ships out 99% of the time and this week was different as he had 4 guys pick up there cabs.

Seemed like a real nice guy when i picked it up.. Even offered to sell me the other Killer Instinked 2 cab that was complete and real damn nice that he had a dead beat buyer for the week prior. If i had the dough on me i would of just bought that one and told him to keep the one i got. But the wife was more happy with the less busy look of the all black cab.

Oh he showed me the monirot as i wanted to see it.. he had the cab all wraped in plastic (ofcourse) so i would'nt see how bad it was. He acted all nervious when i wanted to see the monitor. Said its no great but its decent enough.. And also threw in the "I didnt bother messing with the pots to adjust the screen, so you can probably work it out with the adjustments" bullshit line.. Seen right threw that as i'm not retarded.. Told him i didnt care about the monitor as i plan to toss in a new one.

Oh MY GOD!! I just installed a new light balb in the damn cab and flipped the switch and guess what?? It dont work! Are you freakin kidding me!?!?!?!

This guys getting a freakin email and he's not gona like it.. And if he dont give me the money to replace everything this cab didnt have or said was working and DIDNT i'm going for my back and smack the bitch with a freakin NEGITIVE feedback which will hurt his current sales and the damn Killer Instink cab he's hopping to make 700+ from this week.

She's got a decent monitor and just cleaned inside and out. It's in a Midway cabinet so it's tough and easy to move with built in wheels and handles in the back.


MONITOR - Decent 25" Monitor! It's not 100% perfect but not worn out at all. If they are not working right or worn out I get rid of'em. A new monitor is over $400 so why buy a game and take the chance that it might be on it's last leg or worn out?

The Truth: Looks worn out and on its way out to me!

MARQUEE - Great Shape - new backlight

The Truth: Huh? The damn bulb looks like its the original and was blown. Plus replaced the light balb and guess what? Still dont work!

CONTROLS - Nice Shape and Work PERFECT!

The Truth: No not nice shape.. Looks like someone did a crappy conversion to it and made there own plexy top and could'nt cut a straight line to save there ass. Plus the buttons are all sticky cause someone spilled pop all over it and its under the plexy as well! i would never sell this to someone without cleaning it!


ELECTRONICS - It is in Excellent condition and clean also, no signs of repair or broken traces or anything like that.

The Truth: Yeah cause its like new and new to this cab. Only good part of the cab and the only clean thing in it!

COIN DOORS and MECH'S - O.K. Shape - little rough cosmetically on the front side.

The Truth: Not ok shape! And no mechs to be found! Bottom door is about to fall off.
SIDES OF MACHINE - Not Perfect but in Good Shape.

I'd be happy with original un painted over shape so i could fit all the mess and recover it like new. Its freakin nasty and it looks textured like a crater face!

Message the seller and he sayd i'm easy as pie bring it back and i'll refund you and a little more for your troubles.

Then he goes on to say: Hey i paid more for the cab then you did and i really didnt want to part with her.. lol. Ok sure i believe you.

I'm reasonable to deal with bring it back.

Yeah sure.. Sounds easy but its not. And i think he's just saying that cause he knows i'm not and damnit i would love to say i'm bringing it back just to make him shake in his boots.

I cant imagine what my father would say if i told him that i'm taking it back and you need to come over here and help me yank this thing back down the 2 flights of stairs and put it back and the truck and take another hour drive to his house to return it. Sure...

My thoughts exactly when we got this thing FINALLY up here is that its not going back down.. not in 1 piece anyways.


So i told him i'd be happy if he would pay me back some money to cover the costs of:

2 Coin Mechs
2 locks for the doors
Light balb and starter
cap kit for the monitor and hope for the best

lets just say i have not heard back from him and he fired off a ton of emails to me before i said this to him.

So he's gona play the "I'm a good seller and offered a full refund" bullshit when he knows i'm not gona bring it back. he's done his part now and looks all pretty.. and when i slap the Negative feedback for him he's gona sit there with his normal response of "I tried to fix the problem and he was unwilling"

This is his track record and i thought it would be different since i'm local to him.

I wonder if he tells the people that had the cab shipped to return it as well? lol

Just take that bullshit back. Sounds like a hunk of shit to me.

My MK conversion was found in the trash, for good reason. After spending over $550 to get everything right on it I was only able to sell it for a mere $300.

I will never buy a woodie again for the rest of my life unless Chris rebuilt it

At least we can all learn valuable lessons from this:
- Don't buy conversion cabs sight unseen on ebay
- Never buy a cab from an operator in Michigan, they are as shady as they come.

God damn this has to be the worse month i've ever had. This and my ebay auctions stunk and the guy that was supposed to send a MO for the turbo system never did and said last night he would hit a western union and guess what? Nope. Need the money today for the damn morgage and to cover all the shipping for the aucitons.

To top all that Xian already bought and payed for the game and motherboard from this cab and i've had to hold up shipping it cause i need to try and fix the monitor and he was all fine with me taking a week-week and a half to try then send the stuff to him.

Funny how you deal with guys that are super nice and guys that are complete scams and a waste of your time all at the same time.. What a difference.

take the time and get that shit out of there, down is a hell of a lot easier than up, and go drop it on his doorstep. punch his wife in the baby maker while you're at it.

I emailed him again anyways.. Not gona go away from this like he's hoping. And the fact that he has about 4-5 cabs going for sale on ebay is hopefully enough pressure for him to slap some cash back this way.

I'd love to warn the other buyers and will take the hit on return for it!

Besides.. $1000 bucks says that everything thats missing on this cab is on that fucking Killer Instink 2 cab he's hoping to score a $1000 for.

Also a MILLION bucks says that the high bidder for that cab about 2 weeks ago WAS HIM bidding the shit up. Has to be cause who in the world would'nt pay for that cab if they won? Also he said the second place bidder didnt respond to a second chance offer as well. Please.. Dont make sense.. at $670 i'd buy it.. maybe not from him though.

He wants the cab back as he didnt want to part with it.. He spent more then i did on the cab?? I've got another Million that says he found it on the side of the road!

The guy just got back with me.. Said he's gona see what parts he has on hand and what he has to order. Again, i dont trust him as its most likely a stall tactic. I can see that he wants to send me parts he has from another cab to save him a buck but why in hell order the other parts insted of just refunding me the difference? He's not gona loose money from paypal as he has 60 days to refund the full money or part of it without being charged from them.

Just picked up a 2 pack of starters for the back light and shockingly enough.. its alive!

The man says its a .40 cent part and it cost me another $3.99 so 2 bucks for one.

I'm 50/50 right now on it.. Might call the old man and see how he feels about it.. but knowing him he'll prob say this weekend we'll take it back and drop it on his front porch.

Its not a bad deal if you consider that it will cost me $1100+ 2-300 for shipping for a cab kit thats the same cab with mods from Slik Stik. $1700+ 300 for a combo cab with controller. Oh and another $500 for a monitor. And guess what? I aint got the cash for that project. I will if i sell off my computer though. That would hurt. It would cost alot but be very nice unlike this crap.

Really i may keep it.. Though just the thought of how bullshit the auction was is whats making me say F U i aint no sucker.
