So we were rockin some KOF 97 last night and all was well. I went and swapped in Samurai Shodown 4 and BAM this is what gets displayed:

mv1c.jpg

Now, all games give that garbage pattern for about 30 seconds, then it goes to a thin white beam on the left side of the screen. I'm sure its not the cabinet or monitor thats at fault, I already tested other PCB's. Any idea whats wrong with it? Is it worth repairing or should I just cop another one?

Someone help! I've never seen this trash before.

That is not a monitor problem, it looks like a bios issue, try reseating the bios chip.

Well, if it is a case of bios, I'm glad the MV-1C I just bought doesn't have one. Don't plan on installing one either.

Reseating a soldered BIOS won't help.

Now that I think of it, I kind of get the screen crap from two of my cartridges through a converter. Not sure if they're dirty or damaged.

Yeah I was told to clean the cartridge connectors, any tips on that?

I have the stuff to upgrade to a socketed bios, just haven't had the time/motivation lately. I'll get around to it granted I can get it reading games again.

Dirty cart slots... dirty carts... bad system board... power supply issues...

Do the speakers make a click click click click type sound?

What do you get with NO cartridge installed?

I'm pretty sure I get the same exact result with no cartridge inserted. I tried flipping up all the dip switches to force the hardware test, and no luck. The PSU is fine, its in my astro city, and has never ever had a problem with any PCB's. I get no sounds when I turn it on, no clicks or static.

The MV1-C's have surface mounted bioses, not socketed ones. They're there, just different from most 1slots.

I know. I was going to say he has a magic MVS. Having a socket mod would make replacing the bios easier though if the one on there were to for some reason crap out.

On the other hand, the bios mod on the MV-1C is so dubious, it's doubtful it increases the reliability. At any rate, I don't like excuses not to install a Unibios.

Just a guess, but could it be that one of the RAM chips have been foobar'd?

Damn that sucks, try visually inspecting the board if any connections broke for some reason or what not.

I looked around and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. My carts are in good condition too, no boots or gunk on the edge connectors. Hopefuly the slots just need some cleaning... any suggestions on how to clean it good?

B,

If your board doesn't give you a solid color screen or the cross-hatch on booting with no cartridge installed then it's FUBARed. Probably a CPU or Work RAM problem.

The MV-1C gives a Z80 error on boot with no cart inserted.

Hrmmm good to know!

I'll do some more investigating when I'm not lazy... too many arcade projects on the plate at the moment.

That screenshot looks identical to the one I had when I had a bios issue though. Maybe a connection came loose? For shits and giggles you can resolder the pins on the bios to make sure, you know just reheat so it bonds.

Maybe corrosion or oxydation?

When I'm done playing the MVS, I usually throw it against the wall for good measure. Is this a bad idea?
