Man, at this point I don't even care to find out. I just need some money back.

I bought one and it did the same thing I ended up saleing it like youre doing. If the newer one I have does that im not going to mess with the 360 again.

FYI Xbox 360 DVD drives are married to the specific motherboard they are coupled with at the factory.

If you swap them up without copying and reflashing the encryption key, you can get 3 red lights.

Hey thanks man, this makes sense now. Looks like all that is needed to fix this baby is this: http://www.clevermod.com/index.php?article=11

...looks like you could copy the key from the bad drive and patch it to a new one that you could buy on eBay for relatively cheap (compared to buying a new system anyway), or llama.com. However, I don't have the time or energy to do this, so with a little effort somebody could get a working 360 for cheap off of this.
