3.Alpha Mission 2
BTW can you beat ASO2 without pursuing any
armors...Thats more than impossible...About
Tatsujin2-belive it or not but that`s unreal
game!I won`t belive that it can be beaten!
I remember that I used to beat Tatsujin 1
time and I ended on the 2-nd ending...

It's tough to pick a true "hardest shooter". Many of the Neo shooters have infinite continues due to them being virtually impossible to ever finish without them.

Ghost Pilots is pretty hard, and probably impossible to beat in the typical 4 credits you get in most Neo games.

Some games are fairly easy early on (like Blazing Star), and get to the point of being virtually impossible (the last two bosses and level before them). Others that require you to backtrack in the level (Viewpoint, Pulstar or Last Resort [1-p mode only]) are very hard, but technically can be beaten in one life.

Outside of the Neo Geo, the Turbo Grafx/Duo is probably the best system for shooters. I don't have a lot of them, but Blazing Lazes, Cyber Core and Super Star Soldier are all classics... If you like shooters that are *really* hard though, try Gates or Lords of Thunder, Deep Blue (impossible), or an import shooter (PCE...there are lots of them).

Actually, the best system for shooters IMO is the Saturn. Killer 2D sprite shuffling console, it had many fantastic coinop shooters ported over perfectly to it. All that remained was for the gamer to turn his/her TV on its side, to replicate the vertical shooters perfectly . . .

Examples? Shienryu, Donpachi and DoDonpachi, Battle Garegga, Batsugun, Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus, Strikers 1945 I and II, Radiant Silvergun, etc.

What about Tiger Heli? You have to be a masochist to enjoy this game.

As far as Neo shooters, I'd say Pulstar.

Up until two days ago, I would've answered this question with a resounding PULSTAR! But after getting to play Giga Wing 2 on the Dreamcast, Pulstar seems kinda' forgiving now. That game (Giga Wing 2) is just crazy hard, with ridiculous amounts of bullets on the screen to avoid, which is dead up impossible in a lot of parts. But then, at least it doesn't make you go back and repeat the same damn scenario until you can get past it...

I noticed this line from Narkoleptx:

If you like shooters that are *really* hard though, try Gates or Lords of Thunder

Maybe Gates of Thunder on Devil Mode, but I thought Lords of Thunder was really rather forgiving compared to most other shooters out there. Just get that Water Armor powered up to level 3, and you were home free for the most part. Ahhhhh, Lords of Thunder, truly a game unlike any other. I can't help but wish a sequel would've been made, but then, there's probably no way they could've worked the magic as well the second time out. I love that game, useless ending and all...

I beat ASO2 without using an armor, partly because I wasted my free one at the beginning, then got a whole bunch of messed-up pickups later in the game, resulting in never gaining an actual armor

I thought GigaWing 2 was too easy! Once you master the Reflect Barrier, the game is a piece of cake. I even beat it on the highest difficulty with the standard number of ships and bombs and only continued a couple times (wasn't trying too hard either).

As for Pulstar, it is tough! So is Lords of Thunder, but I actually got to the last boss: once.

True enough. Not too long after I'd posted, I played Giga Wing 2 some more, and this time learned the reflective system a bit better. So yeah, it's not as hard as I originally thought.

I have to admit though, the characters in Giga Wing 2 have to be some of the most ugly designed, sloppily drawn goddam characters I think I've ever seen. What is it with Capcom and wonky artwork? Hell, I skip through the lame dialogue in Giga Wing 2 and Strider 2 for that matter because of the nasty art. Shame really, since the games themselves have such nice work put into them.

Now if you wanna see good character art and design in a shooter, look at Blazing Star. Those character designs kick ass. And for that matter, if you can stomach unhealthy doses of Japanese cuteness, the characters in Twinkle Star Sprites hold their own as well. Yeah, they're cute, and look like they belong in a cartoon for little girls, but their art and design makes them cool, in a twisted sort of way...

I finished Pulstar on one life, on default difficulty Level-4. Just once. Haven't been able to do it again since

You can file AeroFighters under there too. Starting the last level again from the start if you continue sucks. Getting your score reset when you continue sucks too, especially if you can't put in your initials first

GunBird 2 isn't hard as much as it's insane. There's just so much going on when you're goig through the level, and the bosses firepower is damn near impossible to escape. Once you understand the rather comlpex patterns the enimies use, you can navigate through the game with relative ease.
