help needed with monitor issues

title says it. I noticed when I was playing today that there was an area about 3 inches tall going horizontally across the screen that seemed unstable. The graphics were very minutely twitching back and forth very quickly. I was running third strike at the time so I immediately took it out and put in a CPS2 board. Powered it up only this time the screen is reduced to a thin line stretched way out.

I hope this is not the horizontal width coil or something similar and am hoping it is just something that can be adjusted on the monitor PCB off the neck.

If it is related I did notice that the fan in the back of the cabinet (candy cab) is on its way out and is groaning quite loud. Dont know if the 2 could be connected but I just passed that off as no biggie and planned on replacing it this week.

Any help would be much appreciated fellas. I will post some pics tomorrow if needed. Thanks!

thanks for help guys, heres some pics for you to look at. I noticed when I took the back plate off that the monitor was emitting a high pitched squeel but only for a second. I adjusted one of the pots on the neck PCB and it stopped.

I am going to check the remote board now but any other advice would be well appreciated. Thanks fellas

Yo Seth,

Check out the remote control board. If the cable is loose on that or the chassis, then it will freak out (similar to what you're seeing). I almost shit myself once after I rotated my astro and the monitor wouldn't come on. The tube would power up, but I wouldn't even get a picture on it. Come to find out, the remote board's cable was only plugged in 1/2 way.

If that doesn't help, chances are you need a new cap or two, or a bad solder joint finally let go completely. Should be an easy fix if it was working recently with no problems.

By the way, did you notice smoke or an odd odor when the monitor started acting up?

-Bill

*EDIT: Upon further review of the pics, I'm thinking that your h-hold might be off. Does your remote PCB allow for tweaking this, or is the control on the chassis itself?

wsup fellas. So I checked all the remote board and while adjusting the hold pots it certainly did change the picture but did not make it perfect. I am thinking there is some bad solder connections on there so I am going to take that off and try fixing that up and see if it helps. I am hoping this is the case anyways.

prosperine; yeah the cabinet is great. Even had the marquee with it, a little yellowed but Im not pained by that too much, will probably take it to a shop sometime down the road and get it painted up nice and white. Good thing is the Impress words on the side of the cabinet are not stickers so it should be no problem taping those up and getting a clean job. Matsu really did it nice for me this time, cleaned it up extremely well and even threw one of those cool sanwa boxes at me with my buttons! Will post some pics later tonight.

Bill; naw no smoke or anything like that but the monitor is making a high frequency squeel a little still. Im thinking it is just because of the hood off so I will look into that later. What does that mean anyways, bad cap or solder joints? Should I be worried about that at all?

Thanks for all the help fellas, Im feeling like this is a simple fix, if I get this resolved today I will open up a thread in gallery to show er off!

okay that was easy. I just resoldered some of the connections on remote and now I have a picture again. Feel a little stupid, here I was thinking it was a major problem.

However, there is still some patches on the screen where it is twitching a little bit. It isnt really that noticeable but now that I have Im not going to be happy unless I can get that squared away.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing that. You can see it best where there is a light and dark patch intersecting. I am not even sure what could be causing that so any advice would be great. thanks fellas.

so after some talking with a member over on KC it seems like the twitching issue could be some sort of horizontal intereference caused by a bad ground or main interference.

anyone have any info that might substantiate this or even better provide some ways to test this? I am taking the chassis out this weekend to have it looked over but I would like to try some other things as well beforehand.

Thanks fellas, all advice is greatly appreciated.
