Yah I got a Killer Instinct PCB in the mail today that had known hard drive problems. I plugged in the hard drive that it came with and fired up the pcb. No video or audio came out when i turned it on, and I looked down and smoke was billowing out of of the hard drive. Something happened where the IDE cable became so hot that it melted the entire plastic shielding off of pin 2 (i think) down to the metal core.

From the sounds of it, is the motherboard causing the burning effect, or is it possible the hard drive caused all of the problems? I'm tempted to get the $55 compact flash upgrade, but i'm not gonna get it if the motherboard will cook it instantly.

Please advise what i should do.

the ide cable its self has only signals no real power. try a spare hd on it before the upgrade. i would look into the upgrade.

i believe its the hdd its the only place the two things cross power and ide

and shesh this is the 2nd pcb you fried in two days.

I know right! LOL

Fortunately the beer-bath MK2 seems to be working again (minus sound).

I'm normally damn good about not killing hardware (honestly), I just had a bad week I guess.

I dont' know where I could get another mini-harddrive and mini IDE cable to test with. Maybe i'll just grab an untest KI hard drive off of ebay for liek $20 and hope for the best.

After inspecting the PCB, it doesn't seem that there are any blown components or burnt traces, so I think the issue was in the HD only. I guess we'll see when I get another HD.

If you use the Mame chd, you have to turn it back into an IMG format for the hard drive. The laptop HD that would plug in does use 5V so if you put it backwards, you could cook it.(The Cable should be keyed so you cant plug it in wrong) Bill dont hook up the HD at all, and plug the board in. You should hear a loud bong sound and end up with a blue screen, if the rest of the board is working properly. If you dont hear that, you have a problem somewhere else with the board.

Nice Justin I was waiting for you to come online so I could ask you whats supposed to happen if there is no harddrive plugged on on boot. Fortunately I do get the blue screen, generic Midway "beep" and both LED's come on. Is it safe to try another harddrive?

Yeah its safe to try another HD, see if you can find some old HD you dont care about, the IMG file for the Killer instinct HD is less than 256 MB so you dont need anything huge, just make sure if youre gonna use a standard 3.5" HD you buy an appropriate adapter, to kill the 5V coming coming through the labtop connector on the board. I believe Compusa has em. After that youll just have to power the standard 3.5 "hd from your power supply since they require both 12V and 5V to run. If you need help finding the chd files for Killer Instinct just pm me. and I'll show you where to find them.

*Almost forgot the board has numbers next to the hd connector that illustrate the pin # configuration, so that you connect it properly.

What about going the flash drive route for the KI board, I've seen so many of those things on ebay it isn't funny.

Honest to God, I've had like four different Killer Instinct I and II boards, and not one of them has ever worked properly. All I wanna do are some fucked up million-hit combos :crying:
