Smoked glass = WTF (ps: 20 chars is still gay)

Why oh fucking why do they make arcade machines with glorious high res monitors, and put them behind smoked glass all the time? I've had three machines now that I've replaced the glass because it was "smoked". WTF. I mean, honestly, what's the reason? To hide burn in, is what someone once told me. Guess what, when you have burn in you replace that monitor, not make it even shittier by putting sunglasses over it. And to think this comes like this from the manufacture! Anyone here replace thier smoked glass on any machines? I don't see how you would want to leave that crap on.

i came THIS CLOSE [holds fingers close together] to replacing the glass on my Neo Candy...especially when it sits next to the Konami Windy [which does not have smoked glass]. It makes no sense to me. But I eventually got used to it. I still would like to do it someday, its just soooo much of a pain. I wanted to get tempered shatter-proof glass to be on the safe side...

You go buy new glass that is isn't smoked. Right now though, I'm just running my shit with no glass in it.

For glass, I just go to a local auto glass place. I call them, tell them what size, and they have it done in hours. I think I've replaced about every peice of glass in my arcade collection (six, not counting others I used to own, and sold). Any scratch on the glass pisses me off. I'm super anal retentive, obviously.

i have this shitty super thin lucite i paid too much for from lowes.

what do you guys use for control panels?

one of my cabs is from the hood because the monitors too big and the glass doesnt fit. :emb:

I just ordered a piece of glass for my sports staion cab. It was .25 inch thick, 25 inches tall, 24 7/8s wide... it cost me 31 dollars.

I got my CP plastic from TAP Plastics. I just brought the whole CP in and asked them to cut a piece of plasic to that size with all the right holes. I came back a few days later and picked it up for about $30.

The plexi on my minicute is dark as hell while the one on my Neo is barely tinted at all. I'd imagine it's there as a safety precaution since in their heyday these machines were meant to have people staring at them for hours at a time. Probably their way of avoiding a lawsuit.

Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with people's eyes staring at them so much as it does hide burn in and other monitor problems quite well. At the expense, of course, of a great crips picture.
