Joystick vs. Gamepad

I just got my Neo-Geo system and Samurai Showdown games the other day. Anyway, I'm finding it very difficult to pull off the "weapon breaker" moves in SS2 and SS3 with the original joystick. I was thinking about purchasing some gamepads to see if it's any eaiser. Is it hard to play other fighters like KOF and MotW with the joystick as well? Anyone have any advice or recommendations before I get some game pads? Is one better than the other? What are the advantages of using a joystick vs. a gamepad and vise-versa? Any help will be greatly appriciated.

I would go with the MAS arcade sticks. They are the best IMO. Leaps and bounds better than the SNK made sticks and pad.

I'm going to agree with Samurai X on this one. The MAS systems joystick is probably the best controller you can get for Neo Geo, provided you can find one. A cheaper alternative would be to get the Neo Geo CD (gamepad) controller, which is around $50. It's WAY better than those huge stick monstrosities.

I think that the original sticks are great! The NeoCD pads kinda suck.

I didn't like the big stick at first, and retreated to the pad. i learned to love the stick though, it's WAY better than a pad.

i made my own Neo stick, and it's really really good. as good as my regular sticks, if not better.

I kinda like to stick with the original one though, don't ask me why.

Hmmm...I guess it's just me then. I haven't played the games in a while, so I guess I'm a bit rusty, and I don't want to shell out $50 on a gamepad if it's no better than the original joystick.

it's not even CLOSE to the joystick.

The NeoCD pad is poop. i just traded mine for another stick.

The NeoCD pad (along with most all pads) totally sucks to do combos with. many combos you need more than 1 finger and stuff like that.

If you want a good joystick, your best bet is to build it yourself. It's not hard, at all really. You can go to www.happcontrols.com and order your parts, cut some wood, do some simple soldering, and bam you've got a new and very High Quality Joystick. I hate the neo CD pad, I'm working on converting a PSX controller to work on the neo, it's pretty easy, but I wouldn't reccomend it untill you build a stick to get familiar with soldering/making the cables/connector.

I am having trouble using a stick, prolly cause I've been using console pads for years. I did get an oldstyle stick some days ago, while it's rather comfortable, I still have trouble using it. I personally prefer my modified Saturn joypad, it plays awesome for fighting games, especially for the dragonpunch and half/quarter circle motions.

Thanks guys. I'm sticking with the old joystick for now, but I might go ahead and try the gamepad later on.

the old stick is cool, but i hate the button layout. c/d are way to far up, especially d, my pinky always hits it by accident just cuz i gotta balance out my hand.

the new style stick looks much more confortable with a better layout and all but i never used one.

finally, the cd pad is one of the best game pads ever. the only pad that tops it is the saturn one. you gotta love the stick-d pad thing.

Personally I think the pads have their uses. I have an old style, a new style and 2 pads.
I use the sticks for fighting games and the pads for puzzle games like MD3. It works out much better that way.
