Hello,
I am still relatively new to this and just acquired me a Neo Geo AES system a few weeks ago. System is bought was from a user on this site and appears to be in great condition and well taken care. The console has the video out options, such as composite, s-video, and components. Additionally, it is equipped with a bios upgrade chip. The problem seems to be when as startup up beings and the game starts going, my TV (RCA 52W59H HDTV) seems to flash/flicker a bit the entire game. However, it seems to be just fine on my 27” CRT JVC TV. I guess my question is whether Neo Geo AES are prone to flashes/flickering on rear projection TV’s? So far this is the only game system I am having this issue compared to Sega’s, NES, Atari 2600, and ect. Any help or information on this I will appreciate.
Thanks,

The Neo has a very odd refresh rate of 59.18Hz. A small percentage of TV sets are picky about this and if it's not a perfect 60Hz, it will do odd things -- like no picture, rolling, or flickering. It doesn't have anything to do with the mods that are installed, it's the Neo's hardware and the TV not liking each other.

This problem, when reported, is usually associated with LCD type TVs.

Jeff, which crystal controls this frequency? I hope it isn't the main 24 MHz crystal used for the main ICs.

I guess I am one of those in the small percentage on the refresh rate. I am going to try a friend's Panasonic and see how this manufacture holds up. Most likley its proabably my RCA being the culprit. I hope I can find a workaround somewhere because I sure hate to not use my Neo Geo on my 52"!

My AES doesn't work very well on a 52" TV. I'm going to see what I can do to fix this (will require a small modification to the board).

what small fix?

If the 59.18 Hz is from the 24 MHz main clock, I probably wont be able to fix it.

If its from the 3.58 MHz NTSC color clock, I might be able to find a crystal rated for a slightly higher speed that would bump it up to 60 Hz.

Finding an exact part might be tricky. I'd do the math now but i'm way too lazy.

The 3.58Mhz crystal is for the color subcarrier only. You can actually run the console without it (with black & white composite output).

Gotcha.

So it must be divided from the master clock.

Well the Panasonic works just find with the Neo Geo. So its pretty much my TV not cooperating with the game console. Sigh....... Guess I will have to play it on my old JVC until I can afford a newer TV in a few years.

If you're not good at modding things (like myself) couldn't you just get yourself a vga box (upscan converter) like one of the xrgb models? I have an xrgb-2 and it outputs exactly 60hz. I might not know the most about this subject, but wouldn't that fix the problem?

I found mine on ebay for $150. The newer models have component (mine only has s-video inputs but looks great)
