Hi everyone, I recently bought a Neo Geo CD package from a guy I know who sells out of Japan. This package is including two games, Samurai Spirits 2 and Fatal Fury 3. I've been looking over screenshots and reading the reviews daily, but I don't want to base my purchase on just a single review. So, I would like some recommendations for some great Neo CD games from the veteran players. Thanks

definetely get Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 The Newcomers and The Last Blade. Great Games, you can get RBFF2 for about $25 on ebay.

You'll want to get the following titles:

King of Fighters 98
King of Fighters 99
Samurai Showdown 3 and 4
Last Blade 1 and 2 (warning, LB2's load times are excruciatingly bad, but it's really really fun to play!)

Metal Slug 1 and 2
Neo Turf Masters

You'll enjoy any/all of those, I'm sure of it!

Peace

Ninja Master's
Metal Slug
Metal Slug 2
Samurai Spirits 3 and 4
Any KOF.

Makesure you know the prices though, Ninja Masters goes for about $70 and is a rare game to find, MS and MS2 go for $100 and $70, while Samurai SPirits 3 is about $10-$20 and 4 is about $30 or $40 new at videogamedepot.com.

Another great game for the NeoCD is Windjammers.
It's got incredibly fast load time (as do most of the earlier titles), and the rounds are longer than the MVS/AES to boot if I remember correctly.

Just be aware that, if you're not a patient person, you might be disappointed by the load times in most of the higher meg CD games in general. Especially in the newer fighters, the system has some *very* trying load times.

If you can get by that though, it's a fun system to own.

Oh, and definately grab an S-video cable if you're TV supports it. The built in S-video hookup provides an exceptional picture (mine had a better picture than my modded home cart unit).

Thanks for all the replies. Now I've heard about the bad load times, can someone explain this? What I mean is, how long do the load times usually take on some games? Thanks again everyone!

You really have to patient with the load times...Some fighters even load between rounds.

Depends on the game.

A lot of the earlier titles especially loaded only once at the beginning of the game, and then not again. Also, if it's a lower meg count game, any loading that *is* there is minimal, and can be easily tolerated.

Where you run into problems is with the fighters. Every fighter that I played on the CD system had a load time of at least 10 to 12 seconds in-between rounds; higher meg games, such as Real Bout Special, had load times approaching 20 to 30 seconds.

It's not so bad if you're playing in 1-player mode, but it can get especially irritating in vs. modes.

Also, if you're the anal type, be aware that while the CD format offers some nice goodies, such as different (usually better) music, art galleries, that kind of thing, that there still usually is some missing animation. It can range from barely noticable, to quite a lot (in games like Real Bout Special, Real Bout 2, Last Blade, etc.).

Of course, if that doesn't bother you, or you've never seen the game in it's original format, then you've nothing to worry about! ;)

you should try baseballstars 2 and ss2 as they are both great and are not too bad on load times.

Avoid all fighting games, unless you can stand the loading.

My recommendations:

Magical Drop 2
Puzzle Bobble
Neo Turf Masters
Baseball Stars 2
Windjammers
Metal Slug
Neo Drift Out
Overtop
Pulstar
Sengoku 2
Top Hunter
Twinkle Star Sprites

The main thing about AoF 3 isn't necessarily the load times (which I don't remember as being that bad, at least compared to some of the other fighters), but the fact that there's just *so* much animation missing.

Really, in terms of animation, this is probably one of the games that suffers the most on the CD format - I've heard figures of upwards of 25% of the animation had to be cut from the MVS/AES version.

And really, gameplay aside (which some like and some don't), the game really has some of the most beautiful and fluid animation on the Neo platform - it'd be a shame to miss out on that if you're going to all the trouble of picking up the game in the first place.

Okay...

AoF3 load times:

Initial loading: 24 seconds
Level 1: 45
Level 2: 30
Level 3: 29
.
.

Not too bad IMO.

Then - missing anims? Yep, there are some cuts in the char select, there's much less zooming in the CD version, but most of the move frames are intact.

Even the intro and win posings of all chars are there.

AoF3 is one of my faves, I've played the game to death on CD and recently on MVS, and noticed no difference in game play or in the way moves connect/combo.

Hell yeah, the game is wonderfully animated. No wonder, SNK used motion capturing techniques for the char anims. Definitely worth to get the cart as well, while the CD IMO is a must-buy for the sound track alone, even if you don't own a NGCD. Simply brilliant.

Kizuna Encounter, Blazing Star, and KoF 2000 are the best games on the Neo Geo CD. <img src="graemlins/loco.gif" border="0" alt="[Loco]" />

Actually, to be honest, stay away from any fighter if you can. The in game fighting is good, but load times are so bad that you might learn to hate the system.

Games worth getting are as follows:

Metal Slug 2
Top Hunter
Quest of Jong Master (hentai)
Pulstar
Ninja Masters

There are other great games, but regarding those, it's better to buy them on the Saturn or DC.

Magical Drop 3, Metal Slug 1, the KoFs and RBFFs.

and Last Blade on the PSX is in a class of its own - even if you own the home cart it's a must if you are a real last blade fan because you can play as the real Koujirou Sanada, and fight in the dramatic battle against Shikyou where Koujirou dies.

...and I'd toss in Final Romance 2 as well. Mahjong with nude Japanese ladies and super moves, and it's CD-exclusive! :)
