Question about superguns and light guns

Does anyone have any experience running a board through a super gun to a NTSC television for a light-gun game? I know how the old-school light guns, light pens, and similar accessories determined where they were pointed at the screen by timing against the VBI, but didn't know if that was in fact the same way they worked today, and if modern encoder boards like JROK/Neobitz allow the light guns to work reliably.

Any experiences would be appreciated.
