There are many neo geo games that just don't look as nice anymore in teh year 2002. For example, Pulstar, which I loved back in 1995, has shown its age mroe and more with every year, and now it's not about playing a cool looking shooter at all. It's purely, as Billy Pitt called it, a surgical shooter. :(

Another game to go rotten over the course of time is Fatal Fury Special. It just looks ugly to me now. It always played ugly, but I remember when I'd play just to see Mai. She sucks now. :(

However, there are a few other games that still look great, and I want to point them out. I'll start with Baseball Stars 2. It's really incredible what a ton of colors and some personality can do for a game. The game sought to be a comical baseball game and still to this day there isn't another game to give a comical version of baseball so deftly.

Another game that still holds its ground is Samurai Shodown 2. SNK must have pull all the shots on that one, sacrificed every workers' firstborn, and mortgaged the farm, to get that game to come out so great. It's incredible that even after 8~9 years it's better than nearly any other fighter (including most KoFs).

Ninja Masters. The game never tried to fight fire with fire against other fighting games. While AoF was offering bigger sprites, and Kizuna released its own big sprite game, we got ninja masters, where the sprites were noticeably smaller, but the detail in each sprite was incredible. Then you run into the gameplay, and it's really genius how fluid everything moves, armed and unarmed combat, loads of special moves, and loads of combos that even to this day I still find smoething great about the game with each successive play.

Viewpoint also hits the list, and really there has not been another game like it. The stand out music and the level of challenge take this game to another dimension. The fact that all the sprites are so crisp and clean add to the overall beauty of this gem. Really, this is a great game to find. And, just for the old house afficionados, the boss music reminds of James Brown is Dead... hehehe. Simultaneous 2 player is also worth looking into in case you haven't tried it (needs a debug chip).

Of course, games such as KoF 2000 and 2001 are too new to add to the mix. But I'm sure that you all have feelings on what old games are still worth playing :)

The Metal Slug titles have all withstood the ravages of time quite well; so well in fact that Brezza/Playmore were able to get by with creating very few "new" graphical elements for a recent release like Slug 4.

Another game that still looks (and plays) pretty good by modern standards is Waku Waku 7. With its fluid animation and generously sized character sprites, WW7 still looks "cool", despite the fact that it was released aeons ago in "Video Game Time."

And I'll agree that the older FF games look really awful by today's standards. I only revisit them from time to time purely for nostaligc reasons - not because I want to be wowed by their graphics.

The AeroFighters titles look really dated by today's 2D standards as well. Those two titles, while fun in a purely diversionary sense, just can't compete with the newer stuff.

And I was noticing just a few days ago, when playing through some of my older carts, that "Top Hunter" is actually still a really nifty little game. It has refreshingly detailed graphics that really stand out on the Neo, and it plays well too (once you get used to the "stiff" controls). While everything isn't animated as fluidly as they are in a Slug title, the level of fine line detail is higher, and a change of pace from the 2D usual.

Top Hunter is awesome, one of my favorite 2 player co-op games, better (IMO) than MS series for 2 player action... Too bad it was abit short but still incredible to try to beat it with 4 credits each! Great game.

I'm working on beating it with just four credits, which appears to be NO EASY feat by any means! There's a ton of technique to TH, and that fact has gone fairly unnoticed. More people need to check out this game; especially the Neo Heads who dig something besides fighters.

Fatal Fury Special has stood the test of time. It's not ugly in the least, and the play is very deep.

my only problem with ffs is that you can dart out, but you cant dart in. a major flaw in my opinion. on the other hand i feel ww7 will do well.

Samurai Spirits 2 and Fatal Fury Special. Those games never seem to age! They're as solid now as when they were released.

Fatal Fury Special ugly!!!!! I still think it has a style all its own.To me the KOF games 96/97/98/99 have always looked like shit.Mainstream british mags have all said this.

I agree 100% about baseball stars2,this is one of the most innovative and great sports games.

the wall painting on samurai shodown 2 (France stage I think is still astonishing)

Generally the neo geo has held up very well.

Well, the two most obvious selection for me were Baseball Stars 2 and Viewpoint. I would also like to say KOF '95, if only for the truly original and beautiful backgrounds. The MS series is also obvious due to the level of detail in the backgrounds as well.

A couple that weren't mentioned and probably deserved to be are Neo Turf Masters and Super Sidekicks 2-4. The graphics are still very nice considering they're sprites and NTM has only now been surpassed graphically by Hot Shots 3, but not by a long shot either. That scrolling feature when judging your aim still astounds me for a 2D system.

I agree with every comment

In fatal Fury Special 2 stages really still look beautiful

Tung's stage as it pans by the clouds and Kaisers stage as if pans down his massive organ - fwar

Totally agree that Top Hunter still looks good

I think these games had stood the test of time:
Fatal Fury Special
Top hunter
Dunk Dreams
Spinmaster - i think its only of the best looking games on the Neo
Samurai Shodown 1+2

Not so good - anymore, but the games are still very playable
nam 1975
roboarmy
sengoku
ninja combat
league bowling - excellent game but very basic

hey evil while you're quite right about FATAL FURY SPECIAL being being dated and all (the graphics anyways, but i still think it looks good, IMHO). the gameplay is so tight, i mean the control is just right on, its uncanny. FATAL FURY SPECIAL is the neo game of all time. i am really biased towards samurai shodown 1-4 and will always luv those games but pound for pound FFS is the best neo game. :D

I don't know if I can swing with that, because as I see it, FFS is just too hard for me to play now. I would actually put FF2 about FFs in terms of playability. But of course, it looks bad, really bad.

I can't believe I found Mai attractive looking back then - the present, with better art and graphics, spoils us pretty bad, eh.

Wow! Youd and I agree on a lot of stuff! That's pretty much exactly how I would put it. Especially, that SS2 is still better than just about any fighter ever released and it's been out for quite some time.

Well, you know what they say: Great minds think alike.... and so do we ;) .

Top Hunter is EASY! Seriously, finishing it on one credit isn't too hard. ;) There is a lot of technique to it though, you've pretty much got to learn some of the special moves. All you really need though is the fireball, unless you're going for a high score.

Top Hunter really is an underrated game, but does it stand the test of time? I dunno, I still play it every now and then and I get a little bored when I'm playing. And this is on the MVS version, which makes you go through fewer levels than the home cart/CD versions! Still, it's more fun and less boring than Metal Slug 3 or 4

...Huh?
...Wha?
...Juh?

[bonus points for anyone who can identify that episode of The Simpsons]

Seriously though, I have no idea what you're inferring by that.

Maybe it is just me, but when I got in the KOF 1994 Japanese AES cart last week, I was amazed by it. It still looked great and was fun as shit to play. But thats just my opinion.

Waku Waku 7 and Samurai Shodown 2 are a couple of games that I will always see as incredibly fun and will never bore me. They still look good when compared to todays standards, maybe not so much SS2. But WW7 has great music, animation, characters, and style that can't be beat.

Just tossing my change in the well here.

Baseball Stars 2 - terribly unbalanced gameplay. Take the US out, and it'd be alright.

TSS - Excelent.

Windjammers - Timeless.

Dodgeball - Suprisingly, the gameplay is much like the first really...

Ninja Master's - One of the few fighters I like.

I guess all I can say, with the exception of ninja master's, simplicity is the way to go.

I just think that MS3 offers a great challenge with the Japanese army. That's all. It's not impossible, but the discipline it demands from you, and the cracker jack timing, is a little nerve racking.

Thats the one where Homer wants to buy Lisa a pony, but Marge is against it. So when Marge asks Homer to make him swear he wont buy the pony he replies with nonsensical words.

Well, I wasn't saying the game was boring because it was too easy or anything. No, I probably couldn't handle that level... because I've barely put in any time on the game, seeing how I didn't enjoy it the two times I played it all the way through. So I dunno why you want to see me play that part.

Close, I do remember that scene but I don't remember what Homer was saying... that's not the episode though. It was Bart that said all those things in response to someone else.

Also followed by a "...Zuh?" near the end of the episode. ;)
