Sounds like its either:

A) Pheonixed and set to Asian region

or

B) An Asian board in a blue shell.

Are the connectors the those of a Grey board, or those of a Blue/Green board?

Its not a real asian version then. European, US and Japanese region games all run on the same motherboard. Asian and South American releases (grey and orange cartridge) have a longer pin connector on the B board that sinks into the A board.

My guess is your Xmen VS SF is either a home-made conversion, or its pheonixed. Try booting the game and holding the test button on your motherboard. If it is pheonixed, it will pull up the region switch menu.

Also, japanese speach is generally censored in Asian region arcade games. I heard it has something to do with the asian region market being offended by japanese speach.

Best of luck...

My stock (non phoenixed) X men V Street Fighter is a asian version in a blue shell. Since its running on battery power and is compatible with US/Jap motherboards I would say that both mine and your boards left the factiry in the shell they are in now and that for some reason capcom did a blue asian board run.

Its not the first time I have heard of one of these. I have had one in the past also.

This could be completely irrelevant, and is a different Capcom system.
But I've heard the asian (I believe) versions of SF3:Third Strike don't have Ryu or Ken's Dragon Punch and Fireball sound effects either. I'm not sure how true this is, just had a mate a while back who had the asian CPS3 set and he said he found it odd that their sound effects had been somewhat 'edited'.:conf:
