So with the impending release of Opera for the Wii tomorrow, I was curious about the status/performance of Opera for DS. I know it was released in Europe and Japan, but what about in the US, in terms of release or use of the card.

Also, any other options? More of a curiosity than a primary browser, but it would be cool to use. I checked online briefly and found little.

I picked up the Opera Browser when I was in Japan. I love it man. Obviously I lowered my expectation for this 'cos it was accessed through Wi-Fi, so it will have lower data bit-rates to begin with, and the DS has a slower processor, less ram etc. (the ram expansion cartridge adds 10 MB to the existing 4 MB, for a total of 14 MB), but pages load relatively quickly in a matter of 5-7 seconds --- as long as you have images turned off and use 'tate' 2 screen mode. Gmail works perfectly. PHP and JavaScript are fully functional. Even used it to look at some pr0n :emb: Obviously one should set up a whole bunch of bookmarks to speed up access, 'cos no matter how wonderful the touchscreen keyboard is, it still requires 5 times the effort and time expended compared to just typing it out on a real keyboard. Hold up, I'll try to pull up my old thread on the Opera DS Browser.

It's a nice convenience in my opinion. If more Nintendo DS compatible hotspots open up in the future, and all signs point to yes, the Opera DS makes a mad inexpensive machine for surfing the web.

thanks Mr. 'meow.

Now I have to decide.....

Supposedly the Opera DS browser was announced for North America, but so far, no street date has been announced yet :(

Just picked it up today in the sales after being impressed with the wii browser and I had to vent. Its god awful. Its like using a 14.4 modem all over again (wii is fine on same router/connection). Takes a good 2 minutes for some sites to load. Turning off images might help, but if it can't cope with images, its not much of an internet browser.

Trying to navigate by dragging the screen is horrible. It freezes some times then goes back to the start of the page again. Can't get passed third article on joystiq. Browser doesn't remember which screen is zoomed.

Text editing, button clicks and form interaction often lags, its a case of tap the screen and then wait to see if it worked.

Cookies have no lasting effect. Shutdown and reboot and all is lost (unlike the wii). what's the point of password protecting the browser if I still have to log into every god damn site? Are favourites that important?

Handwriting recognition is balls (although I can't imagine anyone using it over the onscreen keyboard, even if it worked). You write something only for it to spew out a random set of suggestions that are nothing like the letter you intended. Try a B and get suggested Z, Q or Y.

Going to return it on friday.

Sorry for bumping this, but I just bought a Wifi Connector yesterday, and I am looking to buy the Opera program for it.

I know it's been a while since this was released, my question is, I only see "Lite" editions on eBay.

Does this mean it's a Lighter version of Opera, IE loads slower, or does this mean it's only for the DS Lite? if it means for the DS Lite, can I still plug it into a normal DS?

There are two versions. One for DS lite and one for normal DS. It's not a cut down version. DS lite version will not fit a normal DS. I'm not sure about the normal DS version on a DS lite.

Both are shit though. Don't be seduced by the Wii browser, as it's nowhere near the same level of functionality. The DS just doesn't have the memory to handle most websites properly.

It's intended for the DS lite, and no, it won't work in the normal DS. The regular DS version should work on the lite, I don't see why not. The only difference is the size of the cartridge. I believe you should be able to get the original DS version on Nintendo's official store...let me check...

yeah, here it is:
http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wc...USD&storeId=10001&ddkey=SetCurrencyPreference

But yeah, it's pretty craptacular, to be honest. I like some of the options the DS browser has over the Wii one, and the setup looks nicer, but it just doesn't fuction very well at all. The worst thing is how slow it is. I even have the recalibrate my stylus every do often because the hit register on the browser seems to be off...guess it's just more precise since everything is so small, I dunno...

I suppose it's nice to have as an option, but it's really not worth the money...not when the Wii version is so much better and is only $5 now...The extra cash isn't worth it being portable...

A lot of people like the DS Browser...I however am not a huge fan since I'm used to the PSP browser. :( Opera on the DS is better than nothing, but it's slow, and a bit awkward in my opinion.

On the other hand: It's probably worth adding internet browsing capabilities to your system. ;) I use the browser on my Lite once in a while.

I'm not looking to do much with the browser, it's for times I can't use the PC, because someone else is using it, but I really want to check out :

www.livescore.com

I figure it's good for that, and I really just want to witness my little DS be capable of something like that, and color me blown away. :)

So I need a "Normal" version? Why aren't they selling that on eBay? Every one of those auctions is for the Lite version. :conf:

yeah, just get a lite, you'll be glad you did anyway ;)

But yes, you'll need the regular one. I've heard that you don't have to use the the expansion pack, but then it'll run even slower (in theory). Although other sources have said you do have to use the pack. In any case, you should just get the one you need regardless since it does help with load times...which are terrible.

Personally, the only times I've really used it are when I'm on campus and can't get to a computer easy enough and just need to check email or something similar or when I'm too lazy to boot up my laptop and get online...although I always regret that since by the time I do what I needed to do, I could have booted my laptop, done everything I needed to and more, shut down and been done with it before the DS browser is even done loaded the first page :p

Seriously, that's NOT an exaggeration.

US Residents $30

Canadian Residents $40

:lolz: :lolz: :lolz: :lolz: :lolz: Nintendo wants to screw me with an 1.25 Exchange rate!

Is it?

I bought one from a guy on gametz for $20, but it's the Lite version. I was planning to mod it for my DS, because it was cheap and all.
