I've gotten to the Phoenix in the Brazil stage (level 4) - been trying to take my time and enjoy the game (and not use huge numbers of continues) - he's a tough one, too!!!

You have to wait for him to land before you can hit him, but every time he comes in for a landing he seems to hit me on the way down. I've tried dodging out of the way, and then rushing back in on him, but he's usually flown off-screen by that point, making him a bitch to fight against!

I've pretty much gotten the China boss down pat, and the other two (can't remember their names off the top of my head) aren't too bad, if you're careful, but that Phoenix is really giving me trouble.

Any hints on how to beat him?

Yeah ! The first time I got to the Evil Fire Phoenix of Brazil, I was like stunned
and had no idea what to do but let'em burn me up bad .... until now.

The phoenix would attack beginning with dashing through the screen. Stay off the middle section of the screen when this happens. Move all the way up or down to be sure to avoid the fiery bird.

Just as the phoenix has made it's past, face the bird from the other side of the screen from where it dashed too, and listen out for its cry. About 2.5 quarters of a second after the cry, it should reach you with its claw.

Counter it with a vertical (non-directional) jump and slash to begin a string of attacks. With Kagetsura, I then dash and kick (barehand blast) it, slash twice, jump kick (barehand blast) and dash and kick again and slash twice again. By about then, the bird would've escaped and flown away for perform another fiery dash. Move away to the top or bottom of the screen for the same sequence to repeat and get the gold you deserve from it.

Sometimes it would be good to observe when the phoenix flies away after being attacked, so you know when to make a move before another attack. Good luck.

Ho ! The next boss, of Brazil ... the Toad King ! Now he is nuts !!! He's nothing like the Fire Dancer of China, Byakki of Japan or Okuni of Italy ...

The bosses are all terrible!

I admit I put the game on easy difficulty and 9 lives so that I could see the ending ASAP. That last boss is one of the worst I've ever fought in any video game, ever. Basically, you get to combo him once, then he kills you. Then with your next life, you get to combo him once, before he kills you again.

Also, the phoenix can be tagged, even when offscreen, if you time your jump correctly; you'll have to figure out its movement patterns, because more often than not, you can't see it. Just jump up and swing your weapon, you'll hit. You can also hit the phoenix when it turns into an "arrow" by jumping over it, then nailing it as it's passing you by (the safest way to do it, by the way).

Judging from the looks of the phoenix, the Sound Factory guys are big fans of 3DO's Heroes of Might & Magic strategy games.

Any strategy to beating the last boss without using so many credits ? I can offered that many on the arcade !!!

I could get to the Stage 5 USA boss with one credit but so far, that's as far as I go playing alone !!
