POW meter in samsho 1

what exactly do the pow meters do in ss1? i know in ss2 theyre for dms and whatnot, but as far as i know, there are no dms in ss1, soo what do the pow meters do? sorry im so stupid <IMG SRC="smilies/loco.gif" border="0">

The POW meter makes you do more damage.

I'm pretty sure that you also took more damage when your POW meter was filled.

Or am I getting this confused with later games in the series...
