OK people, I'd assume this had been a thread before but my search was being wacky. if it has, post the thread link for me. otherwise...go crazy, don't pull punches, and leave the opposition face down in a pile of his own teeth and poop.

I'm leaning towards a DS over a PSP, should I be proven wrong?

I wouldn't mind a DS for Final Fantasy III. I haven't played it in a long time, but it was great back in the day, and the graphical update makes it look worth playing again.

Of course you also have the Castlevanias, Warioware Touched, and so many other worthwhile games.

yes it seems to me like the DS definetly has the RPG market cornered for portables. does anyone know of any worth while RPG's for PSP? i should have made this thread "I'm leaning towards a DS over a PSP, should I be proven wrong?"

BUMP for that thought

RPGs for PSP...

Tales of Eternia
Tales of Phantasia full voice edition
Disgaea
Valkyrie Profile
Breath of Fire III
Jeanne d'Arc
Tenchi no Mon 1/2
Princess Crown
Riviera
Onore no dungeon
Eiyuu densetsu - sora no kiseki FC
Eiyuu densetsu - Gargav trilogy (legend of heroes)
Valhalla Knights
King's Field additional 1&2
Astonishia Story
Brave Story - Aratanaru tabibito
Kurumin
GOC IV Another Side
Innocent Life
Suikoden 1&2
Blade Dancer
Monster Kingdom 1&2
Ys
Magnacarta portable
Popolocrois complete (bad bad port)
Rockman dash 1&2(well..not so much a rpg)
Twelve

"western style"
Untold Legend 1&2
Dungeon Siege : Throne of Agony

And that is not takin into account that the PSP can emulate pretty well the genesis and SNES RPGs, something the DS cannot do unless they recode the game for the machine.

thanks barf, i was obviously uninformed.

Keep in mind that RPGs in Japanese are useless unless you can read them.

I own both, and outside of a couple games that I really love, my DS gets much much much more use than my PSP. Also, look at the games coming out for DS, Front Mission 1st, Dragon Warrior IX, FF Crystal Chronicles, and more.

Not to mention that the DS library is already 100x better than the PSPs, and the PSP is more expensive, the choice seems pretty easy. Pick up a DS, you won't regret it.

BTW, I like the PSP as well, but if I was in your situation and didn't have either yet, I would go with the DS.

PSP has some good dungeon crawls (MUA, Justice League, Dungeon Siege, Untold Legends, okay, UL isn't that great). I love the graphics on PSP, and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is very good, as is the 2 GTA titles.

But DS has all the rpgs, and cool new games and plenty more coming since it is killing the PSP in Japan. So for steady stream of great games, and Nintendo's first party games, then you have no choice but get the DS.

Castlevania, Elite Beat Agents, Doom DS, FF III, GBA games...

I've had both...sold my PSP and couldn't love my DSLite more. PSP load times, and too many ports annoyed me to tears.

On DS don't forget trauma center and phoenix wright games (the Japanese justice for all has english language option), great games. Mario Kart is killer too.

But as a shmup fan, PSP has it all...
emus with fantastic games (arcade -either from capcom collections, mvs or cps2 mame ports optims, snes, pcengine SCD, genesis, msx)
Gradius collection is spot on arcade
Star Soldier is a real feast
Ace Combat X is fantastic

in future, Parodius collection (sexy parodius on the go!!!), twin bee collection (twinbee yahhoo is fantastic) and salamander collections are coming.

For adventures, you can play Lucas adventures on the go (Monkey Island 1,2,3 , Full Throttle, Sam and Max, Day of The Tentacle, Indy 3 last crusade & 4 Fate of atlantis, The Dig, Loom) you can play the other adventures supported by scummvm too. Genuine stuff, there is a very good port of the classic Myst (but chances are you already finished that one)

FPS wise, you can enjoy doom, quake, heretic, hexen, SOCOM or the recent Medal of Honor.

If you don't speak japanese, Puzzle games... Lumines I and II, Puzzle Bubble (the later one), Puyo Puyo, Lemmings, Mercury... I d put The gottlieb pinball collection in there too (i looooove that game)

Fighting games, Bleach 3, Tekken 5 Dark Resurection, Power Stone 1&2, SFA3, Dark Stalkers (you need a paddle addon for the later 2, the handling with the stock cross is not great for circular motions).

Platformers, well Ghouls and Ghost, Katamari Damaci, Daxter, Megaman Powered UP, Loco Roco, Lego Starwars 2 (DS version is horrid bug ridden uncontrollable, PSP ver is fantastic).

Military action with Syphon Filter, Killzone or Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops

Racing with Ridge Racers 2 (no need of the 1st with the second), Burnout, Wipeout Pure, Outrun 2 .

Sports, you got Fifa and Winning Eleven, Virtua Tennis, MLB 06 (i m not a fan of sports games). Haaaaaa i forgot one of my first games but i love it: Minna no golf ! (everybody s golf in english iirc)

Of course, lets not forget the 2 GTA games Vice City and Liberty City.

I could enumerate tons of examples of games worthy of owning a PSP (i have over 30 genuine games for it, and err... the whole rest of the library not so genuine :P).

Don't forget Initial D on the PSP.... I am horribly addicted to this game now.... Not about 30% into the game and I spent almost 6 hours on it already.

PSP's already lost the handheld war.

Don't waste your money. I'm glad I waited a few years to buy --I was thinking the PSP was going to be the have-all/be-all portable with the UMD movies, memory sticks, emulation ability and sheer A/V capability. The DS appeared to be a gimmick-ridden disaster a la Nintendo's other ventures like Virtua Boy, the Power Glove, etc...

Well, by the time the DS Lite came out I made my choice and picked up the Lite. I don't regret it.

What happened? The UMD movies went the way of Sony's other badly marketed formats (betamax and MiniDisc), the games just didn't have a killer app, the price was still high and games like GTA:LCS ended up ported to a $20 PS2 game (so no loss there, I can't wait for GTA:VCS) --meanwhile the DS somehow got programmers to make interesting games, the downloading multi-player is simple and the games are fun for a crowd. From what I understand the DS Lite improvements were also tremendous (I never had the original).

So yeah, DS Lite. Case closed.

DS hands down.
You misspelled PSP.

It really comes down to what kind of games someone wants to play (which has been said endlessly and I know everyone is sick of hearing repeated). DS has some unique, quirky games. If you are sick of all the existing game genres out there, then DS is probably for you. Being a surgeon or a lawyer is a cool idea, but it will appeal to some and completely turn off others. Playing games about cooking meals or raising pets will make some people piss their pants, but put others to sleep. If you are looking for a new experience, DS is that. And it also has a good selection of Puzzle games and RPGs if those are your things.

On the other hand, if you still enjoy genres like shooters, driving, fighting, adventure, or whatever, PSP beats the living shit out of DS. Just demolishes it.

I'll give it to the PSP for fighting games, but other than that there hasn't been a lot of great stuff released over here. DS does have plenty of non-quirky titles such as Castlevania, Resident Evil, etc. as well.

I only own a DS and sometimes I feel like I'm missing out, mainly because of all the Capcom and Konami games.

The way you typed out your reply it sounded as if the DS is only interesting for its quirky titles and this to me just seems way too far from the truth.

It's true that the system is home to a surprisingly large assortment of strange games that are... well... strangely fun, but I've been finding that the bulk of its most enjoyable games are in the form of genres that we've known and have been playing with for years now.

Aside from the "Brain Games", I believe that the top-selling and most talked about DS games are RPGs, Platformers and Action games (Animal Crossing and Elite Beat Agents are up there too, but I don't think Sim or Rhythm games are considered niche or quirky anymore.)

On the other hand, if you still enjoy genres like shooters, driving, fighting, adventure, or whatever, PSP beats the living shit out of DS. Just demolishes it.

I'll give the PSP Shooters and Driving, but the other two?

Assuming we're sticking to original system software and not emulation (if we were then PSP would win with ease), then I'd personally take Bleach (along with its upcoming sequel) and the two Jump! games for my Fighting fix any day of the week.

This may be an issue with semantics but isn't the Adventure genre defined by games like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango?

The DS has two that I know were received fairly well (Phoenix Wright and Trace Memory), but what does the PSP have?

I know the new PSP Metal Gear (which may sway me to finally buy a PSP) is a hybrid of Action/Adventure, but once we start getting into combined genres and stuff this shit gets way too confusing for me to bother caring enough about it...

I mean... if it's an Action/Adventure, then can't we compare it to other Action games?

If we can, than the DS has an assload of those (Castlevania vs Metal Gear? a tough call indeed.)

Where the hell was I?

Oh yeah... I'd go with the DS.

Hey, I don't blame you kids for investing in a PSP. I almost did. But the writing is on the wall.

Sony as a company has been having trouble now as a corporation (other than computers and PS2, it's lost a lot of ground it all its traditional strengths). It needed the PSP and PS3 to clobber the market in order to stay on top. The PSP has not. All reputable sources have it getting trounced in sales.
http://psp.ign.com/articles/750/750197p1.html

The PS3... well, "the jury's still out". ...but...

Other than prattling on about "confidence" (something Sony's used in describing both PSP and PS3 sales), things are not going the way they will ultimately need them to. Five years ago, doing good but not excellent wouldn't have been too bad. But times have changed. The iPod saw to that.

I'd go for the DS if I were you. I was skeptical about the DS last year until I saw Jump Superstars last year and I was hooked since then. There are some other great games out there to play and you won't be disappointed. Sure the PSP has the graphics and movies, but where are the games? I work at Blockbuster, and at my store, we have more people trade in their PSP games than their DS and that tells something (at least to me). If you do get the DS, try to import games as well cause there are some great Japanese games out there to play! Bleach, Jump Super and Ultimate Stars, future Phoenix Wright titles (if you are impaitent), and plenty other titles are out there for you to play.

The PSP is basically just an expensive media center with a handfull of titles worth owning but if you just want to play games and do nothing more, then the DS is right for you.

well I say get both, I just got 3 new Psp games Which were Prince of persia,Lemmings and Mecury melt down. But the Psp is a great Machine for what Sony lets you do like Download demo's and stuff along those lines and to be honest I hardly play my Ds games.

While psp Ridge racer and Breath of fire 3 get played alot but my Gba gets played every single day cause my Collection is so good.

The PSP can do an enless amont of stuff.. Whatever you can think of can be done with it as the PSP community has an enless homebrew support.. people making programs for it that do tons of stuff. so much its hard to keep up on.

Also i dont know why no one has mentioned it.. Theres a Neo Geo emulator thats supposed to be at full speed right now that uses the same roms from mame. That and also the Capcom system 1 and 2 made from the same guy. Its the best emulator out there.

But let it be known that you will want an early first original firmware of 1.5 to play all of that.. Also theres a program called Devhook that emulates the latest firmware so you can have the originall 1.5 FW and also load up firmware 3.0+ to play the latest games and connect it with the PS3 and in the near future download select PS1 games to the PSP from the PS3.

So i'm sure theres some fun games on the DS.. But believe me.. it cant even touch all the PSP can do.. and i didnt even mention the fact that it can play music and movies from either the memory stick or UMD.

Seriously, you can take this thread and pretty much put it on top of any other thread praising the DS and bashing the PSP as they're all the same. Boring and pointless with everyone just dicking around throwing sales figures at each other like it means something. Hell, look at any console A vs. console B thread, all the same.

Although I still remember the threads where the opposite was the case, and everyone was bashing the DS saying it was only a gimmick system made to keep people away from the PSP until Nintendo released their next big portable.

Personally, I am still a proud PSP owner. Have been for quite a while now. I'm not interested in the DS right now and I probably won't be until Nintendo has released their third or fourth generation DS. I am sick and tired of Nintendo fucking with us and releasing revision after revision of the same hardware, and I'm just not buying it anymore. Nintendo's portables are getting like the ipod, stylish for about a year and then the new, sleeker version comes out.
