Official Website is up...

http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mpo/top-us.html

One of the two handheld games that i've been anxiously waiting for(the other being Castlevania: PoR), is finally dropping this Wednesday. Can't believe it! Big Boss returns to take on his former unit. Where have we heard something like that before. Looks very promising storyline-wise. Will it top MGS3? We'll have to wait and see. The 6th can't come soon enough.

I'm still planning on grabbing the Premium edition of Portable Ops as well. That PSP camo case and the other extras are too hard to pass up.

This will be mine day one.

I heard that according to David Hayter, this is the best MGS script yet. Also, this is essential if you want to play MGS4, they are connected.

Considering it sells, more will come.

Man,I've been waiting for this game since the news broke.

I already have the Konami Style Premium set on pre-order,but I'll be picking up the US version on day one as well.

Yea, I've been interested in this, but how much is Kojima involved in this game?

After a two year hiatus from the world... Big Boss has returned!

Picked up my copy this evening. Played it for about a hour and a half when i got home. Here's what I think so far...

First thing you're going to notice are of course, the graphics... and boy... do they look good! Not only is this one of the best looking PSP games i've ever seen, it's also one of the best handheld games i've ever experienced period! It's about as close as you're going to get, playing a MGS game that resembles it's older console brother on the go.

Really like what they did with, Roy Campbell in this game. Seemed like a badass in his younger days(even as a cripple). Naked Snake looks pretty sweet. While his new Fox Unit sneaking suit isn't as cool looking as all the camo's from Snake Eater, i still dig the outfit. If you pan the camera around him and look at him from the front, he looks really detailed. There are however, some clipping and jaggy issues as many of the reviews have stated, but that's to be expected. Hey, still looks smooth enough for me.

Secondly, the music and sound effects are superb. I like a lot of Harry Gregson Williams work and I thought he did an awesome job for MGS2 and MGS3. Sadly, he's not composing in this one(i'm sure he's hard at work on MGS4). I believe it's the original composer for MGS on the original PSone version that is doing the conducting in this one. My impressions so far, He/she does a great job on capturing the music experience from the previous two console games. I like the Alert music already in this one(more so than MGS2's Tanker episode). I'm just waiting for the official MGS theme to sink-in somewhere in the game. Then i'll be like, " OH HELL YEAH!"

Voice work... Hey, it's David Hayter. You either love it or hate it. The dialogue so far has been solid. Lt. Cunningham i'm already considering Fox Unit's version Revolver Ocelot since he's an interrogation specialist. Just watch the intro.

I won't say anything about the digital comic-like cinematics. You won't be watching those 30 minute long cinematics this time around. I'll leave those for your viewing eyes. Btw, the codec scenes seem to be all personal text reading. No voice overs on those. Which i don't really mind. You can only do so much with a handheld game.

I was a little surprised that there was no intro movie during boot-up of the title screen. You're treated to a nice pic of the famous Foxhound symbol with the knife in the fox's mouth.

As far as controls go... i don't like the analog stick for the PSP but it seems alright in this game. The control set-up is pretty much the same as the console versions except, holding down "O" brings up your item selection screen. You select your item by pressing one of the four directions on the D-Pad while still holding "O". The L & R Triggers are now your way of controlling the camera. Be prepared to be hitting the L Trigger a lot to fix the camera. Basically, to face the direction that Snake is facing.

Gameplay-wise, this new MGS installment is now, mission based, instead of one big non-linear game. Got through the first couple of scenerios now, i'm recruiting military for my new faction. Hmmmm... I wonder what that new faction could be? lol I'm starting to learn the kinks of it. Looks promising and seems to work pretty well so far. I got to play some more.

So, was it worth spending $40 on a new PSP(been awhile since i did that) game and updating my PSP's firmware to play this? OH HELL YEAH!! Have you been listening to this long ranting impression of mine? hehe

This will definitely help hold the void until MGS4 comes out. I even held off on starting Castlevania: PoR tonight. MGS: Portable Ops owns the rest of the night. Poor Zelda: TP... i'm still trying to finish the last portions of that game.

You know when you're playing a MGS game there's going to be drama. Lots of it. You know what i'm talking about MGS fanboys. This game aims not to disappoint either. So grab your PSP's and keep that charger plugged because you're in for another long magical ride of Tactical Espionage Action proportions that only Kojima Productions can deliever. "Rejoice Snake! Our's will be a glorious battle!"

Damn you, why must you burden us poor folks with this good news!:crying:

Looks like it's time to sell something off for this goodness. Thanks for the in depth review. As a MGS fan myself this game has looked more promising day after day.

Got mine today as well and have been floored by it.

The story has excellent potential and may easily beat MGS3's (though note so sure about MGS2's, yet). The cutscenes had me real fired up.

I really like what they did with the 'personal army' idea, it really feels like a huge team effort instead of a one man show. You set up attack teams, medical teams (to make various medicines for you), technical teams (to make weapons/gamdgets for you) and spy teams (send them to various locations and they get useful info, like a weapon being good for the taking somewhere, and procure items). They are tons of types of soldiers as well, like a soldier with rescue experience will be much faster at retrieving soldiers or an athlete who runs faster than usual). So what I'm trying to say is, its genius.

Like daking mentioned, the music and gfx are excellent.

Kojima and his team own.

I've been playing this for two days and I am totally in love with it.

The controls took a little to get used to,but other than that,it is a damn fine game.

I'm really digging the whole comrade system....pure genius.

BTW,I am happy to see the 'truck' making its way back into the series.

"uh-oh,! the truck have started to move!"

It sucked in MGS3 and Im sure it isnt much better here.

If this is early on in the game, what i did when putting a Spy Unit together was, capture a few soldiers and waited for them to side with me(message appears in the Briefing Menu). "Successfully persuaded the prisoner _____ has joined your squad."

Once they were available to assign(Manage Option), i put specific soldiers(Elephant, in my game) into the Supply Depot(area). These guys will gather intel everytime you go back to the Briefing Menu from a mission. Sometimes i just go into a mission then immediately Abort and new message is waiting for me in the Briefing Menu. I'm not sure if happens all the time. Might depend on time lapse.

If you return and get a message from the Spy Unit, go into the Report Option and read what intel they've gotten back. Campbell should set-up your next assignment.

Maybe you're a little farther than me and what i'm saying is old. Hope that's not the case. Could be helpful to someone who hasn't figured this out yet. Someone should be assigned to completion on the boards. hehe

As far as progression goes, i just made it to the East Pennisula and am at the Harbor. I've been told "You'll find what you're looking for there." Sounds like the new Metal Gear to me.

Btw, I'm not digging the Stamina meter so far. It's made me fail a couple of missions. Can't find Rations all the time, which sucks. It's kind of hard without a tranquiler gun when you're a soldier other than Big Boss. I'll see if i can get better with this.

Hey thanks for the info.

That's exactly what I did. I've placed my available spies in two different locations. No word back from them yet, though.

Yeah, the stamina bar can be a pain, but that's one of the things that makes squad management a bit more interesting, imo.

Thanks for all the positive feedback on it guys. I got my copies in (along with a few of those cases) but I didnt claim one for myself....it looks like I may need to invest some time into this game after all. But how will I juggle it along with PoR?

I have finished it and was completely blown away by it, just excellent.

The story owns so much ass and there were revelations with some pretty big implications.

There is a vid (I'm sure you'll recognize it when you see it) that is prolly one of my fave moments in gaming.

Place atleast one each on every location, you will not be sorry. I put a few in each location and tons of reports started poring in. They also get tons of ammo for you, you don't need to worry about ammo at all in this game.

You can fast forward time in this game 3 turns in a row (look at the right most icon in the menu). This makes attaining stuff from your buddies faster, weapons/meds/reports etc. You do it thrice and then enter a mission, you can instantly abort if you want and fast forward thrice again.

Finished Portable Ops already? DAMN! lol That must have been one heck of a speed run. Congrats!

Glad to hear everyone came together quite well. Can't wait to finish the game myself.

So, is this game worth getting a PSP for? I'm a huge fan of the MGS series, but I'm not sure I can justify a purchase of a PSP for one game.
