Hey guys, I would post this in the tech/help section, but I really wanted to make sure everybody got a look at this.

I have two monitors...both of them are from Japanese cabinets, both 29" (27 viewable).

One is a Nanao, one is a TOEI.

They both look like they are going to need a cap kit.

Would anyone here be willing to have me ship the chassis of both the monitors to them, you do a cap kit and then ship them back. I can't provide the actual caps because you can't find them anywhere in a kit, so who ever did the work would have to get the caps...

I would cover all costs and pay an hourly rate of your choice.

Please let me know if this is something you would consider.

PM me guys and I really hope someone can help.

Thanks

Chris

What are the monitors doing?

Caps are easy to do. I could do 'em but I don't have those monitors here to test the chassis with after replacing the caps & soldering up the cracked joints.

Well one of the monitors has a geometry issue (the Nanao) where it is pin-cushioned towards the top and the top is keystoned, sloping down slightly from left to right.

The TOEI has tons of tell tale signs of needing a cap kit...

The image is dull, the colors bleed (especially red, which bleeds from left to right in streaks) when you crank the brightness/contrast. There is also some weird jittery interference in bright white screens, or with certain games.

I would be willing to have you try a cap kit on one (the TOEI) and see what type of results we get...if it really needs more work, I could ship it back.

I cant really think of any other way to do it... I just don't feel like risking it myself.

what do you think?

Is the deflection yoke secure ?

I've been a slack-ass about capping my astro's chassis lately. Do they use special caps that are impossible to find in the US (much like the rest of the hardware in these cabs)? Or, are they just regular caps? I know there's not kits available, so I'll just make a list and order from Jameco.

Also, when touching up bad solder joints, which ones should I be touching up? How do I tell if they're bad?

Thanks!

Resolder the flyback and all connectors at a minimum.

Bad solder joints look like they have a ring in the solder around the pin. That ring is the crack in the solder.

I have a monitor board here to resolder & recap. When I get it on the bench I'll take close up pics of cracked solder joints and post 'em.

Did you ever get around to grabbing those pics?

Not yet. Been all over God's green Earth for business travel and just got home from a trip to Prague today. I'll have 'em in a couple more days.
