Wells Gardner K4901 - Replacing a Width Coil

I tried editing my old post but the forum hasn't been letting me edit things over the past few hours or so.

Ok, I just tried adjusting my width coil. I did it with a metal hex key (a no no), but I did it with the machine off. Unfortunately, it was stuck. I'd try to turn it left or right, wouldn't budge. As I stuck it in farther, it made some crackling noises (sounded like it was really dirty inside (I saw what looked like green build up on in the hex insert before I used the key). It sounded like it was rusted stuck or something. Then as I turned harder and harder both ways, no budge, and then came a few cracks. Whatever was in there, stuff started falling through the bottom (little black/silver pieces that looked like the hex insert with screw rivets on the outside). Anway, eventually all the stuff just cleared out and now the hex key doesn't fit at all, just goes right through an empty hole. Surprisingly, there's nothing wrong with the screen, stayed the same as it did before, but now there's no way of adjusting anything.

I recently bought a new K4900 width coil on ebay, so once I get that in the mail, I think I'm going to try replacing it. Any tips? Is this an easy procedure?

Re-read the original post about trying to adjust the coil, yeah, I think I broke the core. I did try adjusting the monitor with a metal hex before while it was on, it was only on about 15 seconds, but the heat might have affected the core. Anyway, I did order the new one, so hopefully that'll come in soon. Damn, haha, I'm ready for my cab to be in good shape.

Yeah, common item on those old monitors.

Just discharge the CRT and carefully unplug everything.

If you are careful you might even be able to do it without removing the board from the chassis - just jockey it around enough to desolder the old one and solder in the new one. That's what I did - only after removing the anode connection from the side of the picture tube and removing the neck board to have more room.

If you haven't recapped the board yet then just take the whole board out and blow the dust off with some canned air. Once you do that then resolder the flyback transformer and all the connectors on the board (yoke, input, etc...) as those solder joints tend to crack. It's some simple preventative medicine while you have the board out.

I'll probably just end up taking the board out. I already recapped it so all is well, just need to replace that coil.

thanks

sorry for being so open ended. I cant find mine on the board at all. i noticed it had coil underneight and thats what i cant find. I have found a tiny little turn knob but looks like nothing i have seen the replacement ones look like. It is right behind the H position and H Hold knobs.

There is a better picture.

Could the little white turner between the first two adjustment knobs on the board to the left be the width adjuster?

My ex that still lives with me has a nice camera so i will snap some better pictures of it to let you all help me, if you all would be so nice. Its wierd how i cant find the model number of mine anywhere on google or anything. Its chassis is a 19-K7602 with serial number of WG275966. Thanks all.

Here are 3 different pics of your width coil, it's the black vertical cylinder with a hole in it located on the back left side of your chasis. I got the same monitor and snapped some pics for you. It's alot easier to find when you know what you are looking for :)

how do you adjust it? Is it still with the plastic screwdriver piece in it?
Thanks for your help

Radio Shack has a set of plastic hex type tools you can use to adjust it.

DO NOT USE METAL TOOLS TO ADJUST IT.

i understand that 110% but thanks for the warning as well. I wish i could make shift a plastic tool. Does anyone know how hard it is to turn this? Is this one like the other ones that break cause they are very old? If so where would i find a replacement to it, incase its too much money i wont really screw around with it.

They don't break due to age itself... they break due to the rubber bits that help hold it in place getting hard and holding it fast. Once that happens you can only move it with a bit of luck.

Stick the tool in and try to turn it left then right... if you can't budge it then don't mess with it.

Thats good advise channelmaniac.

I sometimes sqirt a little WD40 to help loosen the core if it is tough to turn.

If the core cracks its a real bummer to remove the core without damaging the coil.
