Hello!

My name is Robert Ivy, I run a site called Underground Console Mods where we specialize in overclocking game systems.

I will usually overclock a system and keep it, but I do get offers from time-to-time from people who want an overclocked console of their own. Would any of you be interested in this? If so, I can overclock a few and list them here when they are finished. They can be a trick to overclock so i want to make sure there would be an interest in these before I start working on them.

The systems I can overclock include:

Sega Dreamcast (most asked about & most recommended)
Sega Genesis
Neo Geo AES
Neo Geo MVS
Playstation
Turbo Grafx/PC Engine
SNES
NES

I would be interested in having my AES and TG-16 overclocked, not sure when I would get it done though. Here are some basic questions that I, an probably many others, would
have:

Do you have a rough price per system?

For all of the systems you have listed, does overclocking remove slowdown in (insert example game title here)?

Will overclocking prevent specific games from running at all?

Good luck with the proposed service and welcome to the forums.

Any questions you have please ask! :)

Price wise I haven't worked over the details, as i'm just gauging interest ATM. It would depend on the availability of the systems I recieve.

Not all systems overclock perfectly, so each system would have to be run for at least a couple of days straight in order to ensure stability. I wouldn't be accepting systems to be modded for this reason, I would only sell systems I have tested and approved.

All systems definitely benefit from the faster CPU, of course there are a *few* games that run less than perfect. For this I would be installing a user selectable processor speed switch that would allow for stock gameplay as well as a "turbo" mode.

EDIT: Here is a dreamcast running a hardware demo stock and overclocked. I made this video about 3 years ago and just found it on google video! :)

So everything will run faster than it should? could you explain to me why I would even want that? I wouldn't exactly want to watch a DVD movie in fast forward. Do games run at proper speed? If this doesn't just affect slowdown, I don't get it.

This is usually the reaction I get when first mentioning overclocking a game system.

Overclocking the CPU does not mean games will run in "fast forward", it is simply a way of helping the CPU maintain a 60 Hz draw rate. Games are timed to the NTSC or PAL refresh rates, NOT the CPU clock. However, there are a few rare cases where poorly made games are timed on CPU speed, this is where the clock speed selection switch comes into play.

This is simply a way to remedy the lag or slowdown that many games can have when the CPU is overworked. An overclocked CPU produces smooth gameplay at normal speed, not "fast forward" ultra fast gameplay.

I'd be very interested for this on an N64. This would give new life to many a FPS or even ISS 2000, making the Hi Res modes playable.

Sadly the PS2 can not be overclocked without making it incompatible with most TVs. (i've tried) :)

I'll overclock an N64, a Dreamcast, and a Neo Geo AES and list those for sale in the forums and see what kind of market there would be for these. If it seems people might want more of these, i'll make more accordingly.

Damn now I want my Neo-Geo, SNES and 3DO Overclocked as much as possible!

I can now imagine Axelay or Gradius III on SNES running smooth, or Last Resort or Viewpoint with no slowdown, heck seeing 3DO run ANYTHING with no slowdown would be sweet!!!!

I've never even layed eyes on a 3D0 unfortunately. It's always possible with the right data sheets and CPU pinouts. :)

+1 the frame rate summers on many N64 games, especially Perfect Dark and Goldeneye.

Perfect dark *definitely* benefits from this!

How do you get PD to play without locking up? Mine does after 45 secs, if it even starts up. For Goldeneye, it just speeds the gameplay up, so it is like playing in fast forward.

I've never experienced any fast-forward gameplay in Goldeneye. You may have been used to the crawling framerate and it seems to be running too fast but in actuality is running the way it is meant to run.

Also, your N64 is locking up because it does not like running overclocked, as most systems don't. This is simply why I would not accept systems from buyers to modify, instead I will modify the systems, test them for stability, then sell them if I am satisfied with their results.

Hmmm. I did the modification according to this page here: Link. Just as I can slow the gameplay down to what it calls "1.0x", I can speed it up to "2.0x" which seems to be fast forward to me.

That makes sense.

I'm curious, can you overclock the regular "gray" N64's?

The "1.0x" and "2.0x" designation is their way of telling you what the CPU's multiplier is set to, for example:

The CPU runs at 93.75 MHz out of the factory, on a 62.5 MHz bus.
This means the multiplier is set to 1.5x (62.5 X 1.5 = 93.75)
1.0x is actually an underclock, so I hope you havent set it to that!

I've overclocked several grey N64s, although i've never had a transparent machine *not* overclock. Out of the many N64s i've overclocked, i'd say 30% wouldn't, or would lock up shortly after. 60% overclock to 2.0x (125 MHz), and 10% or fewer run great at 3.0x (187 MHz).

I'm still confused about the 2.0x overclock. So are you saying that at this speed Goldeneye is playing as it should and 1.5x is just too slow naturally? There really doesn't seem to be much lag for me in this game, compared to PD, so all it feels like when I turn it up to 2x is fast forward.

Right. Goldeneye is not programmed according to the speed of the CPU, it is programmed to output a maximum framerate of 60Hz, which is syncronous to the NTSC output frequency.
