Whats the best KOF game?

Iv'e played most of them and the last few games on the Dreamcast(were these even good conversions?) and I hated the 3-d backgrounds they added which hurt my opinions on 98, I really like 97, I didn't like how things were in 94-95, so what game would you recommend and is the U.S. versions harder to come by?

Oh man! Don't knock it out like this ( 94'/95')!

For me all Kof's are great excepting 97' ( The worst soundtrack on a kof game ).

If you're collecting Kof's, I would recommend you to buy them all Starting like this order : 98/95/94/96/2001/99/2000/97

This is my Fav order. The rest is up to you. :D

:) Is the DC versions at all a representation of the Neo originals? I ask because I played one of them and it looked great but I hated the 3-d backgrounds, I do think 95 has the best backgrounds around though, but the dashing is messed up, I like how 96 and up play better. 98 is the one with alot characters right? Was that called 99 on Dreamcast?(confused)

King of Fighters 95 is what I play the most, becasue 1995 is when I got into the Neo Geo. I also like 2001 too, but 95 is still tops.

My favorite KOF's in this order.

1. KOF 2000
2. KOF 1997
3. KOF 1996
4. KOF 1999
5. KOF 1998
6. KOF 1995
7. KOF 1998
8. KOF 1994

Haven't played 2001 yet. The DC ports of KOF 98 aka dream match 1999 and 99 aka Evolution are better than arcade perfect!!! I think the music in 97 rocked!!!! but KOF 96 definitely had the best soundtrack but you could say 98 had the best soundtrack since it had the best tracks from KOF 97, all the tracks from 96 AND its own kick ass original tracks. KOF 97 had the best boss in the series IMO Orochi ownz1!!!1 When I get my Neo even though I have 97 on my Jap Saturn, I'm still getting it on the neo, along with 96, and 94!! Also looking forward to the arcade perfect port of KOF 2000 and 2001 coming to the Jap DC and PS2.

Yes, the US versions is more rarer than their jpn counterpart.

Nah, My favorite is KOF '85. Jeff Bogard was a beast. His standing C kept players away so much and his Sempuuken SDM nearly covers the whole screen! Plus his running animation was too cool.

98 is your best buy no doubt!! plus basically in that one games u have 94,95,96 and 97 (ok no boss team but hey)

but my Fave Kof is 99 i suppose because having played every other every year in my mind things actually changed in this, Strikers being the big difference but for some reason it did have a different feel!!

i like them in this order 97/98/95/00/99/94 have not played 96 or 2001 but lan to get all for mvs

Hmm...

Between '97 and '96, which is better than? I've never played '96, but I have '97 for Saturn, and I like it... But I'm gonna have to agree with whoever said it.. That the music sucks (besides for a few tracks). I like Fatal Fury soundtracks though...

Oh well, anyways, back to the topic. I'm not a KoF nut, but I do dig it a bit. I'm also a nut on soundtracks... So would I prefer KoF '96 over '97!??

By the way.. SonGohan.. Do you like Dream Theater?

I like '97 and later, although '98 left me cold. I need a storyline and new characters

kof 96 and 98 are my favourites.
Kof 2001 is very cool in the gameplay area but the backgrounds are generic at best.

98 is my fave.
2001 has good play mechanics, but that's about it.
99 has the best artwork and the most colorful backgrounds.
2000 was average at best.
97 had a great storyline, the best in any fighter.
96 suffered from the "extra" mode of 94-95, but had the infamous boss team + Kasumi + Vice & Mature.
95 marked the only appearance of Eiji in KoF.
and last but not least is 94, with its huge character sprites, old-school gameplay, and lack of team edit we take so for granted these days.
