Color Problem on my new Supergun

I just finished my first supergun. It works great with my MVS. The only other board I have to test it with right now is P.O.W., and on that game the display is all messed up. It works fine except red=green, green=blue, and blue=red. The colors are all in each other's places. It's a standard jamma game, so I don't see the problem. Of course the MVS pinout is slightly different, including the location of the test switch, but I don't see how any of that could affect the color out. The P.O.W. board is in great condition.

With the supergun brand new, can I be sure the game has a problem? Any ideas?

What video encoder is in that gun?

I had that exact problem with my Ninja Gaiden and Shadow Dancer boards on my NeoBitz-S encoder but they work fine with the JROK. If your supergun uses an AD72x-based encoder, that could be your problem.

Assuming it's not the encoder,

You probably have the colors wired up wrong.

Yeah Murray, it's the Neobitz-S. So that encoder has a problem?

Yeah that would be the obvious answer, Norton, but it works fine with the Neo and Hyper Neo, and I'm sure it's wired up right. It works with P.O.W. when I rewire it. Which is stupid.

Unfortunately, it's probably your encoder then.

Of my JAMMA boards, the NeoBitz-S got the colors swapped (and / or completely just failed to sync) on Block Out, Ninja Gaiden, and Shadow Dancer. My MVS, Bloxeed (System C2), and Final Fight (CPS1) boards did just fine with it.

As I said, 100% of those boards work just fine on the JROK (or probably any Sony-based solution, if I had to guess).

That's awful. I wanted a Jrok in the first place, but last I checked they're $65 plus shipping, and I was able to save an ass-load of money by getting a Neobitz DIY kit instead. Guess I'll have to get a Jrok after all.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that NEO Bitz converters were meant for AES and MVS boards.

Everytime members built Jamma superguns, it always seemed like they used JROK converters.

On D-Lite's site, in the building a supergun section, he said he didn't have any compatibility problems with the Neobitz (he was talking about the component video one).

I fixed the problem by taking the Jrok out of my consolized MVS and putting it in the supergun. I'm pretty sure I broke the Neobitz in the process (I had glued it down in the supergun, and I had to pry it with a lot of force to get it out). Now I need to get another Jrok for my consolized MVS.

In my brief comparison between the two on the MVS, it looked like solid blue had a lot of extra noise lines in it on the Neobitz, and solid purple had more noise on the Jrok. Overall, I have to say the Jrok looked slightly sharper and smoother, but you could only tell the difference on bright solid colors. (I was using S-video on a 32-inch non-HD Toshiba that's new enough to have component inputs.)

From what I've read, NeoBitz over component is a very different beast from NeoBitz over s-video or composite since it's using a custom circuit for that (not the AD724 encoder ic). Its component compatibility rate is much higher than its s-video or composite compatibility rate.

dejavu - i had same probs few weeks ago with my Fish-Built SG, that has default NEOBitz (component/s-video/comp), with the double dragon II PCB...the colors are just unnatural looking...it had been ruled since that its encoder compatibility issue with this board...luckily, my encoder is external pluggable unit and just commissioned for another external encoder to be built but a JROK based this time.

tho, from what i gather from the responses on the thread, compatibility issue was only with the s-video and composite??? and if i used the component aspect of this encoder, i should be fine with the display? is this correct? so the compatibility data with these two encoders could be summarized like this:

NEOBitz on Neos and HNG64s:
- component --> YES
- s-video --> YES
- composite --> YES

NEOBitz on other JAMMA PCBs:
- component --> YES
- s-video --> NO
- composite -->NO

JROK 4.0 on Neos and HNG64s:
- component --> YES
- s-video --> YES
- composite --> YES

JROK 4.0 on other JAMMA PCBs:
- component --> YES
- s-video --> YES
- composite --> YES

this comparison data sounds about right for most SG users here??? :spock:

D-Lite has a NeoBitz component-mode compatibility list here. DD2 isn't on it, though, but that probably means it just hasn't been tested.

For the most part, your summary looks ok but it's not really that clear cut. Sometimes, it's possible to have a board + encoder + TV combination that doesn't work but the same board + encoder might work with a different TV. Since jamma boards weren't originally intended for TV use, they didn't really put much effort into compatibility testing in that respect.

When I say 100% of my boards work with my JROK, I mean just that. 100% of the jamma boards I own work with my JROK + TV where 50% of them don't work with my NBS + TV.

I think it's safe to say the Neobitz has more compatibility issues than the Jrok. However, I'm still curious about those who say the Neobitz-S is better on the Neo than the Jrok, because that's not really what i experienced. I could save a lot buying a $30 DIY Neobitz kit over another $65+S&H for the Jrok.
